I can't believe that guy was called safe - and the ump was so emphatic about it afterward. The Braves runner didn't even try to act safe. This is also a case where I support public disclosure of umpire disciplinary action. Dude obviously needs to take a break for a few games.

Jerry Meals' name is now mud in Pittsburgh. He's the umpire who made the Don Denkinger-like call to end a 19 inning marathon last night at Turner Field. The Braves' Julio Lugo was clearly out, yet was ruled safe to end the ballgame...What's the deal?

My theory? The ump took an ED drug around the 9th inning, hoping to be in the throes of passion an hour or 2 later. When the game went long, he panicked, thinking the potency of what he took would wear off, and he wouldn't be able to achieve full arousal. In an effort to save his woodrow capabilities for later, he blew the call so that he could take care of business back at the hotel.

I have no proof that's what happened. It's just a theory.

Ed, you think MLB's poor excuse for a "Commissioner", Allan H. Selig, would explore use of replay for plays like the one that ended that 19-inning marathon?

I honestly don't think Selig has a problem with what happened.

It was a 19-inning marathon Tuesday night, and had Julio Lugo been ruled out instead of safe, the Pirates & Braves would've been at least 20 innings long. I'm old enough to remember when the Braves & Mets played quite a marathon in 1985. It was a game that ended at 2:30a or so (ET) at the old "Launching Pad", but I thought the Mets ended up winning that game...
