Reports are Carlos Beltran is going to the Giants for a package of prospects that includes RHP Zach Wheeler. Wheeler was a #1 pick (6th overall) in '09 and is considered one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. That is a HUGE price to pay for 2 months of Carlos Beltran who can not be offered arbitration after the season.

That might also be the best place for Beltran to win a World Series ring, Keyser. I don't think the Mets wanted to deal Beltran within their own division and make one of the two top teams in the NL East stronger.

The Blue Jays announced they've acquired center fielder Colby Rasmus and pitchers Trever Miller, Brian Tallet, and P.J. Walters from the Cardinals for starter Edwin Jackson, relievers Marc Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel, outfielder Corey Patterson, and three players to be named later or cash considerations.

Three players to be named later or cash considerations?? This trade will take a while to sort out but it looks good for both teams. Toronto got a good young centerfielder for the future and the Cards filled a bunch of holes for the playoff push.

Now put me in the camp of guys that felt Rasmus was never going to reach his potential playing for TLR. Whatever the reason for the spat, or whatever it is between them, is hard for me to evaluate from out of town. Still, with all the uncertainty going into next year, you don't just dump a guy who plays a decent CF and clubbed 23 gophers with a .859 OPS in his age 23 season.
For all we know, STL misses the playoffs, Pujols goes to the Cub or Jay or Godknowswhere, TLR retires, and all Mozeliak nets is some draft picks (assuming Der Kommisar does not re-sign), and a rental on some marginal relief pitchers.

True with the play of Jon Jay, this may not really hurt the play of the team this year, but I have a feeling in a couple years Rasmus is going to be clubbing 25-30 HRs a year for someone, and is nowhere near FA... I just feel that Mozeliak could have gotten a lot more for him. Watch Friedman in TB get more for BJ Upton, a guy who is older, more expensive, and long term, probably not as good as Rasmus going forward.

Giants Close To Acquiring Carlos Beltran
By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 2:27pm CST]
2:27pm: The Mets will pay $4MM of the $6MM remaining on Beltran's contract, an executive not directly involved with the trade tells Sherman. The number is confirmed by ESPN's Buster Olney (Twitter link).

1:30pm: If nothing happens in the next 24 hours to scuttle the deal, it's just Wheeler for Beltran and cash, tweets Sherman. The Mets are sending a significant amount of money, tweets SI's Jon Heyman.

12:45pm: Olney tweets that Giants pitching prospect Zack Wheeler is expected to be the centerpiece in the trade, and Jon Paul Morosi agrees.

12:17pm: Carlos Beltran is going to the Giants, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown, with logistics being worked out. Just minor details remain, tweets SI's Jon Heyman. ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that the two teams are at the one-yard line, while Brown reminds us that a 24-hour waiting period applies since Beltran has 10-and-5 rights. The Phillies are just barely hanging on for Beltran, according to multiple reports.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Nationals are still after Denard Span, and Drew Storen may be in the deal. That sounds awful for the Nationals. However, it would be a Mike Rizzo move. Very possible.

According to the Associated Press, Carlos Beltran has officially accepted a trade to the Giants. The Mets will acquire right-handed pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

I'm all for trading prospects to win now but Zach Wheeler is a guy to build a rotation around and should be an untouchable. Wheeler is FAR too much to give up for 2 months of Carlos Beltran and there will be no compensation when he leaves after those two months. Anything short of a World Series appearance and this trade will be a disaster. This was a fantastic trade for Sandy Alderson and the Mets.

Their rotation is already loaded and if it means another Championship then its a good deal but if they come up short then its a bad deal.

Sounds like Hendry and the Indians are working out the details for getting the hell rid of Fuk. Glorious. Now Dewitt can play in the outfield full time.

Those guys aren't under contract forever. Cain is a free agent after next season, Sanchez after '13 and Linecum after '14. If they lose/trade someone Wheeler could have slid right in and not miss a beat. He's too much to give up.

Won't they get picks for Beltran though? They do an excellent job at drafting and are probably confident they will get another can't miss stud prospect.

No. It was written in his contract that he can not be offered arbitration after the season.

Righetti has a wizard-like affect on pitchers. He seems to get guys who are flyball-type pitchers to mysteriously, not give up dingers at the expected rate.

Duncan and Cooper have nothing on Righetti.

it would be suitably hilarious if the cubs end up stuck with all of their high-priced low-performance talent, even with the rumors out there that they'd be willing to pay ~90-95% of the salary... then the problem is that they'd get little to nothing back for it, and unless you wanna tell me that, say, zambrano is a clubhouse cancer and you have to get rid of him a la milton bradley or later carlos silva, then like... yeah.

anywho, i'm surprised that save k-rod the closers haven't really started moving yet... you figure there's heath bell, then the 2nd tier of brandon league, leo nunez, joakim soria, etc etc. that's what i'm most interested in right now.

Weeks is out 3-6 weeks with a severly sprained ankle. It will be interesting to see what the Brewers do now. Keyser, can you give me a run down on what second baseman may be available? :(

Yeah that sucks. The Brewers have been linked to Jamey Carrol so they'll probably step up their efforts for him. They also have a kid at triple A named Taylor Green who is having a really good year. They may jjust call him up and give him a shot.

No love for Craig Counsell? He's a grindy superstar.

I'm pretty sure Counsell is older than Omar Vizquel.

They called up Farris who was hitting .256 at AAA. Green has been playing 3rd and they want to leave him there. Douchebag, I think Counsell is 0-40, for some reason that just doesn't excite me very much.

I see that Green has played 70 games at 3B and 25 at 2B this year. Calling that kid up probably means they are going to aquire someone rather quickly.

They were talking about that last night during the game. I'm surprised he is even still on a major league roster at this point. It amazes me that people like him and Augie Ojeda were able to make millions of dollars just because they can play multiple positions and suck at hitting.

He is a local guy from here, and over the last few years has done very well in this role. But, it has been awful watching him this year. I was at the game on Tuesday, and he had no chance against Szmarja(Sp?). He literally just blew it right by him pitch after pitch. There was talk before Weeks got hurt that if they had picked up Carroll that there was a good chance they were going to just release him.

Jamey Carroll was also linked to the Rockies before they made the deal for Mark Ellis with the A's, Keyser. Even though Colorado has faded like an old pair of Levi's, the Dodgers are still very much a mess, and I wouldn't be shocked if Carroll, Juan Uribe and others are available...if the price is right.

How the hell do you explain Vogelsong? And Duncan's recent fix-me-ups, like Lohse and Westbrook, have mostly sucked. McClellan hasn't exactly looked like Dizzy Dean out there, either..

With the red hot Red Sox visiting U.S. Cellular Field this weekend & the Yankees hosting the Orioles in The Bronx, you know a lot of the attention out east will be focused on those 2 teams, of course, as the countdown continues towards the MLB Trade Deadline Sunday.

The two hated AL East rivals are in the mix for Dodgers' righty Hiroki Kuroda, along with the AL Central-leading Tigers, according to MLBTradeRumors.com. The Yankees are also believed to be looking at the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez, but the asking price remains "very, very high", tweets ESPN's Buster Olney for the right-hander.

The Web site also reports that the Brewers are doing background checks on Dodgers' IF Jamey Carroll, while another L.A. infielder, SS Rafael Furcal, is now generating interest from several teams, including Milwaukee. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal's own Twitter account says the Dodgers will only trade one.

Additionally, could 2 other hated rivals be willing to make a deal? ESPN.com's Jayson Stark rumbles and grumbles that the Dodgers and Giants are actually thinking about a Furcal deal as well. Before the two teams made a deal in 2007 involving Mark Sweeney, L.A. and San Francisco hadn't made a deal since 1985.
