They just pulled Hunter Pence from the field at the start of the bottom of the 5th. Apparently, he has been traded to the Phillies. That is a great addition for that team.

Hell yes he is. Love me some Hunter Pence. Weird arm though.

Yeah, I was watching the Brewer game and he actually had taken the field. They pulled him back in and all the guys were saying their goodbyes. From what is sounds like the Astros got a lot, 4 players, and good ones at that.

They got a haul  I really like Pence, but they gave up way way too much for him. Their #1 and 2 prospects!! Pence is a great guy to have on a team but he is not a game changer....just as solid of a ball player as you can get.

We offered Soto and DeWitt straight up for Pence but we were rebuked.

I heard they were ready to pull the trigger but when they found out Quade's mouth was permanently attached to Dewitt's dick they declined.

I can't confirm that on this board without permission from Q himself and he is busy leading the troops in a huge matchup against LaRussa. These two match wits with the best of them, reminiscent of Connie Mack vs Joe Mcarthy.

Amazing trade for the Phillies. Not only do they get Hunter Pence through 2013 they didn't have to give up Dominic Brown to get him. They gave up a first baseman (they have a pretty good one) and a pitching prospect but they have 3 other good ones right behind him. The rich get richer.

Brown is already an assumed major league player. With that in mind they gave up their #1 and #2 prospects....that is a haul....and while I really like what Hunter Pence does....he doesn't do enough to warrant trading that. Beltran will improve the giants more than Pence will improve the Phillies and they only gave up 1 big prospect.

Beltran will be a Giant for 2 months while Pence will be a Phllie for 2 years and 2 months. When Ibanez leaves after the season the Phillies can slide in Brown (their best young player) because he wasn't included in the trade. These trades aren't comparable.

There is also a clause in Beltran's contract such that SF cannot offer him arbitration, thus they will receive nothing for him going elsewhere. Doubtful that anyone would have anyway, as that would have guaranteed him a salary over $20m which he probably might have accepted. That's just way too much for an injury-prone aging (albeit productive) outfielder.

Hunter Pence isn't exactly a franchise player, but I have a suspicion that Phillie prospects are getting overrated these days, much like the vaunted Met prospects of the late '90s (Greg Jefferies anyone? Pulsipher?). Still, Houston did well for themselves.

SF and Philly are probably on another playoff collision course. For the rest of the NL, I don't mind seeing these two powerhouse franchises gut their farm systems trying to get that last 1% out of their championship windows..

Sox are trying to dump Thornton? I can not believe the Rangers would entertain a trade for him that would net the Sox Derek Holland.

It must be nice to have a GM with some vision.

The Tigers acquired RHP Doug Fister and RHP David Pauley from the Mariners for 3B Francisco Martinez, OF Casper Wells, LHP Charlie Furbush, and a player to be named later.

Fister is better than the crap Detroit currently has in the back of the rotation but he certainly isn't the high impact starter this team needed. Pauley is a nice addition to their overused and depleted bullpen.

Martinez was rated as Detroit's 4th best prospect, Wells is a very good defender but not much with the glove and Furbush is probably destined for the bullpen. All in all a pretty blah trade.

This still leaves Illinois high school product Casey Crosby in their minor league system. Too bad Hendry won't ship them Byrd for him.

The Brewers acquired infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Nationals for Double-A outfielder Erik Komatsu.

Nice pickup for the Brewers. Hairston still has a little pop in hs bat and can play all over the diamond. He will fill in nicely at 2B until Rickie Weeks returns. Komatsu projects as a 4th outfielder.

The teams that are talking to the Sox about Thornton, why aren't they talking to the Cubs about Marshal?? Hendry is letting another golden opportunity pass him by.

The better question is why in the world are the Sox trying to dump an important part of their pen when they are still in the race for the division

If Hendry trades Marshall, who will be the go to lefty out of the bullpen?

They have Hendry signee John Grabow for a couple more months before he attempts to get another 7.5M on the open market!

The Indians have scratched their top prospect starter Pomeranz from his start tonight  Jimenez could be on his way to Ohio.

Indians To Acquire Ubaldo Jimenez
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30 at 6:47pm CST]

The organization that traded C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee away in high-profile summer trades is about to acquire an ace of its own. The Indians and Rockies have agreed on a deal that will send Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland in a deal that includes Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and Matt McBride, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (Twitter links).

Jimenez, 27, has a 4.20 ERA with 8.6 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and a 46.8% ground ball rate midway through an up and down season that has included flashes of brilliance, stretches of poor performance and a stint on the disabled list with a cuticle cut on the right-hander’s thumb. The third place finisher in last year's Cy Young voting, Jimenez broke out in 2010, posting a 2.88 ERA with 8.7 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 221 2/3 innings.

Some of Jimenez's value comes from a contract that now seems team-friendly. Jimenez earns $2.8MM this year and $4.2MM in 2012. His contract includes a $5.75MM club option ($1MM buyout) for 2013 and an $8MM club option for 2014 ($1MM buyout).

Cleveland is going all in, it's supposedly 3 of their top 4 prospects
