Brace yourself for the following bit of news: Gunner Kiel, one of the top recruits in the country and the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2012 according to ESPN.com, has reportedly committed to Indiana over suitors like Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

And no, this is not April Fools' Day.

Wow. If he ends up playing for IU it will be a HUGE first step for Kevin Wilson. I hate to be so cynical about things, but I am going to temper my excitement until his name is officially on the dotted line and he puts on an IU jersey.

That's certainly better than the horrific IU podcasts commercials on the BTN. The podcasts commercial looks like it was created in powerpoint.

True.

I have been impressed so far with what I have seen and read of Kevin Wilson. Seems like he knows what he is doing. Who knows maybe IU can jump ahead of Purdue in the We Suck Division of the Big 10 this fall?

IU is going to benefit from having Kevin Wilson. He's a no-nonsense guy whose aggressive style will no doubt bring a sense of urgency to the IU program. Over-time however, there is a risk that he alienates his players. He is NOT a players coach. When he was OC under Randy Walker, there were lots of stories about players not getting along with him. I talked with Zach Strief, lineman for the Saints, about Wilson and he absolutely hated him. But I don't think IU needs a buddy coach right now. They need someone who will come in and shake things up. He certainly did that with Randy's teams in the early 2000's with great success, installing one of the early versions of the spread (actually Rich Rod and Clemson helped him out). He took a physically outmatched Northwestern team and turned it into a team that ended up sharing the Big Ten Title in 2000. This kind of guy will be perfect for IU... and I can't help but draw comparisons to Bobby Knight.

I agree, but this year is going to be rough. I just don't think he's got the pieces yet. They'll be a bowl team pretty quickly though.

This is exactly what IU needs. They do not need a buddy or a friend. They need a coach who is going to get up in their grill and push them to produce up to their capabilities. Boob Lynch was not ever going to accomplish this. Wilson seems like the guy who has the ability to deliver. And if some of the players do not like him, good. They do not need to like him. They need to respect him and be willing to play for him.

I read an article not too long back comparing Wilson to Bill Snyder from K-State. If that is even close to being true, then I think there are some good things in store for IU football.

Wilson isn't Snyder because Wilson will be on the first cattle car or covered wagon or whatever the fuck mode of transportation is used in south Central Indiana to get the fuck out of Bloomington after his first winning season. That being said, I like Wilson a lot--I think he was the best of the hires this offseason--and I think they'll win at least one game they shouldn't this year.

Oh yeah, I do not expect him to be like Snyder in the sense that he stays around there for the long haul. I am sure he will be gone when the right opportunity comes along. Hopefully he can be a guy that builds something in the time he is there and puts the program in a much better position for the next guy to come in and have some success.

Wilson's biggest challenge will be recruiting. Unfortunately for him even if they start winning, he's still got to out-recruit ND, OSU, Purdue and to a lesser extent - Cinci, UM. He's got to change the culture and the recruits will come but he';ll still have a fight for instate recruits.

One of the leading recruits in IL (RB Dave Smith, Bremen) lists Indiana as his favorite right now.

But he also has 20 schools on his list. Until he reduces that list down, I would take it with a grain of salt. He also is friends with recent Iowa committ Maurice Fleming Jr and may be a package deal with him. For the record, Iowa still has not offered him.

While I would be happy if IU went 0-12 every year, that sucks. He really could have made a difference.

At least in football, it's more important to build a program rather than just get one player and hope he solves it all.

Disappointed to say the least.

Reportedly he will be visiting Notre Dame this weekend.

Someone must have talked some sense into Gunner. Choosing a crap football program like IU over 'Bama & Oky State is foolish. Gunners phone probably rang off the hook after the IU news was released.

I saw Brick's post and saw it confirmed other places that Gunner is visiting Purdue. Shows me that Indiana is definitely out. Scuttlebut is that Kevin Wilson has really lost control of the team. Must've really pissed off his brother enough to tell Gunner to look elsewhere. He clearly wants to stay in Indiana. Purdue has a chance, but I'm guessing ND is in the pole position. I truly hope ND gets Gunner... because I think that will force Maine South's Matt Alviti to choose Northwestern over Notre Dame.
