Its really hard to root for this team as they continuously prove what a joke of a franchise they really are.

The Bears still say this is not a financial issue, it is a safety issue.

Maybe I can give them the number of my guys at Medina landscaping!

The guy at the Park District that has a job of taking care of this has to be embarassed.

Who do you think will have him on the air first?

Ken Rocko? or something like this?

I'd like to say I'm surprised.

But this is the Bears.

Not the least bit shocked.

The park district employees in charge of the Bear's field do a good job of living up to the stereotype of a typical city worker.

Also, how does no one from the Bears head out there the morning of or day before to see if the field is ok?

One of these days the Bears will agree to field turf. Maybe the park district is encouraging them.

Its no so much the major fuck up of the field being unplayable and nobody realizing it until 30 minutes before it starts, but how do you put the team back in the bus to return to Bourbannais and not have them stay and do a meet and greet with the 40k people that spent their hard earned time and money to go see their sorry asses? whatever team official that made that call is a fucking idiot, but then again its the Bears so I guess its not a big shock. What a bunch of fucking morons.

I can understand needing to practice, but you're right about trying to save face.

Maybe they figure after this weekend no one will care about this.

I hate these fucking guys.

of course you are correct. And although no one wants to hear it. that is exactly what they would have done in Green Bay.

The Bears get most of the blame on this one, not the PD. They should pony up the $800k or whatever it takes for good artificial stuff.

Also - to those saying an "expert" (like the 'sodfather') should be called in and help fix the grass surface - the field is 50 ft. from one of the largest lakes in the world and it is below the water level. Pretty sure that can't be fixed. That is the biggest reason for the poor quality of the field.

edit:.....aaaand there is a game scheduled there next week, right?

I was told that putting down fieldturf would more likely just lead to lots of hydroplaning and that Soldier Field is ultimately doomed no matter what.

That may be true also. Sounds like maybe they should/could have done something about it when they did the remodel a few years ago?

Naw, that would have made too much sense.

I just read this on profootballtalk.com, and they put the maybe the NFL will take this out of the Bears hands and do something.

With 2 bad baseball teams and people always talking about the field, people will be talking about this on Monday, this is an big embrassment and they should have done something for the fans coming out, hopefully they refunded their money.

Watching ABC 7, Giangreco is blaming the Park District for the field, and blasts the Bears for they way it was handeled.

They did report the people got their money back and free food.

This is unacceptable on so many levels. I know two different people that tried to bring their family to this thing. One of the kids, who is five, said "If they knew everybody was coming, why didn't they have the field ready?"

The innocence and honesty of children. Perhaps if the laughing stock (Hi spmack) that is everyone handling this field the past five years had the sense of a five year old, they wouldn't have been in this predicament.

It is unbelievable how incompetent the Chicago Bears organization is, especially when it comes to public & customer relations. The Soldier Field turf has been crap since the stadium was rebuilt. You would think that after a concert & soccer games, that the Bears & CPD Management would check the field earlier in the day to see what the condition is. The CPD is at fault for the shitty field, but the Bears are at fault for not being pro active & checking the field out.
So how do the Bears handle this situation? They put the players right back on the buses & get the hell out of there.
They should should have has the players still participate in the event by mingling & signing autographs.
This bush league stuff shouldn't happen in the #3 market city in the NFL. This isn't Peoria, Danville, or Rockford...this is Chicago for God sakes.

I understand getting the players back to practice, especially with the condensed preseason.

The team is refunding money and gave free food and soft drinks to fans who showed up.

I still hate these fucking guys though.

Wow. So the Bears knew the field was shit as early as 1:00pm Friday.

Soldier Field ground crew failed to properly water field
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2011, 11:40 PM EDT

The bad news is that the inability of the Bears to practice at Soldier Field on Friday night was avoidable. The good news, if there is any, is that the situation will be remedied before the August 13 preseason opener there.

“Over the last few weeks, we’ve had some extreme heat conditions,” Soldier Field general manager Tim LeFevour told Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune. “It was a miscalculation on our ground crew’s part. They did not get enough water on the field. Some of the seams opened up. It’s not an issue or concern with next week’s game. We know it can be corrected. But in the best interest of the team tonight, it was the right move to send them back to Bourbonnais to practice.”

LeFevour said that the Bears could have practiced on the field Thursday night. The problem was noticed at 1:00 p.m. CT Friday, and it couldn’t be corrected by the scheduled start of practice at 7:00 p.m. CT.

Fans who showed up for the canceled practice received reimbursement for tickets and parking. They were allowed to enter Soldier Field, where they were treated to free food and drinks, along with a fireworks show.

The mishap has yet to persuade the Bears to shift from grass to artificial turf. “Right now, the Bears have determined they want to continue to play on grass in the northern climate of Chicago,” LeFevour said. “And if that’s the surface they want to play on, we’re going to continue to commit ourselves to giving them the best playing surface.”

We’re going to continue to hope that the NFL steps in and tells the Bears to tear up the grass and install Field Turf.
