JORR has an expansive and not-particularly-reality-based definition of the word "currently." Though this does explain why he thinks baseball is currently the most popular sport in America.

You can only hope to be as bad at law as Pierre is at baseball.

Once upon a time, so were Wood and Prior.

And in this week's episode of "Non Sequitur Theater"...

It's not really a non sequitur. I could use Joe Charbonneau if you prefer. Don't you think many people thought he would only get better?

I am always dubious of saying any pitcher will get better, especially hard throwers. Pitchers are the most injured players in baseball. I look at projection of position players differently. Especially 21 year olds who have shown they already have the talent to be solid players. I would say Castro projects as solid. Renteria should be the floor. I would be satisfied with that. He may be better, though, much better.
That's where the non sequitur came from.

Okay. I agree that it's usually a lot easier to predict future performance by a hitter than a pitcher.

not real? as real as you ... anyway are you saying juan p finishes the season with a higher obp than castro?...you would lose that bet... i am not interested in wagering anything..but i have no doubt castro gets on base at a higher rate than pierre..he is a better hitter.

No, I am saying Castro will not be 25 points higher than Pierre.

Even a guy who wins the batting title will not hit .515 for 7-8 weeks.

Oh my god. Gregg's fastball was 88-92 and straight. Should have killed him.

And yes, Visquel shouldn't have batted. Not only could Alexei have taken him deep with 2 outs, but even if he didn't you want him in there for defense in this tie game. Stupid.

We'd have the lead right now had in not been for Omar's lack of range.

Bartender: hey buddy what'll ya have?
JORR: PBR please.
Bartender: sure.
JORR: [watching TV; castro hits into double play]Yes!
Bartender: What happened?
JORR: [scrawling in notepad]Do you think that Juan Pierre is bad at baseball?
Bartender: What?
JORR: Bad at baseball. You know. Don't you ever listen to Boers and Bernstein? And what's on the jukebox?
Bartender: I don't know, Train? I think.
JORR: Huhhhmmmmmrrrrrggghhh...Good God.
Bartender: Here's your PBR.
[walks away; some other guy sits next to JORR; Castro flubs a play in the infield.]
JORR: Hahaah! Yes!!
Some guy: Oh, Sox fan?
JORR: What? Yes. But...that's not why I'm happy. Do you ever listen to Boers and Bernstein?
Some guy: They on the score? I...I don't know, sometimes I listen to them. I don't listen to the ra--
JORR: Well get this. He thinks Juan Pierre is bad at baseball.
Some guy: Juan Pierre still plays baseball?
JORR: Don't you watch the Sox?
Some guy: I don't watch baseball; I could just tell you are a Sox fan because you applauded something the Cubs did wrong.
JORR: Well, there are these guys that think that Starlin Castro is good at baseball, and I'm trying to prove that Pierre can still play. ReGARDLESS of what Bernstein says.
Some guy: Uh huh. I don't give a single ass hair about that.
JORR: By cracky.
Some guy: Don't talk to me.

Far short of your best work, W_Z. Anyway, I don't pay much attention at all to Castro or the Cubs. I certainly don't cheer when something bad happens to them. I don't have that much energy.

Yeah, by cracky doesnt work well outside of the CSFMB world. On the occasional times I have tried to use it I am met with blank stares or confusion.

I was talking with Silvy last night at Fox and Hound and we happened to talk about Pierre at one point. I asked him if despite the very good run Pierre was on, if he ever had the thought of wishing the Cubs had hung onto Pierre. He agreed with me that he would never want him back. I can think of no player I have seen that gets more meaningless hits and fails more when you need him to do well. His arm on defense is an open invitation for even slow runners to take an extra base and for a guy that has stolen a lot of bases in his career, he sure gets caught stealing a lot. No-I much prefer Castro, who is a true star in the making. He will not only hit for a high average, but hit with more and more power as well. Unlike Pierre, who is a punch and Judy hitter with too much emphasis on the Judy.

Apparently you and Silvy believe in clutch hitting.

Have there been any other Cub rookies over the past twenty years who you believed to be "true stars in the making"? Because, whether Castro turns out to be Derek Jeter or Tom Tresh, I don't think you have any clue what kind of career a guy is going to have.

I think we have to define what "clutch" is first. I do think there are guys who perform better under pressure than others. We're all human beings who have seen it in situations in our own lives or have felt it ourselves. Baseball is no different. But maybe all the guys playing at that top level are the ones that could handle the pressure in the first place.

I do think the "when" of things matters in baseball maybe more than anything else. I don't particularly care if it's due to luck or something else. But I don't think Tuffy Rhodes is Reggie Jackson.

Juan Pierre's slugging is actually lower than his OBP. Yikes. That's really rare...and yet Adam Dunn is doing the same thing this season.
