Former Waukegan High School and University of Illinois basketball standout Jereme Richmond was charged Tuesday with beating a woman and threatening her with a gun.

Richmond, 19, and Matthew Riley, 22, of North Chicago, were arrested Monday afternoon outside the victim’s house after police found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol in the car the men had driven.

After a stellar high school career at Waukegan, Richmond went on to Campaign, but left the team after his freshman year in order to enter the NBA draft.
No team drafted Richmond, however, and many speculated he had attempted to move to the professional level before he was ready.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen Scheller said Richmond and the 17-year-old woman had a dating relationship that had soured in recent weeks.
On Sunday, Scheller said, the woman drove to Richmond’s residence in the 2000 block of Arthur Drive in Waukegan to retrieve her cellphone.

The two began to argue outside Richmond’s house, Scheller said, and Richmond shoved the woman back into her car during the ruckus.
Monday afternoon, Scheller said, Richmond and Meyer drove to the woman’s house and Richmond began to argue with her again as her mother looked on.

At one point, Scheller said, Richmond spit on the woman and said he was going to shoot her.
Richmond turned back toward the car where Meyer was seated and was searching for something when a Waukegan police car came on to the scene.

Police found the weapon in the car and took both men into custody.
Richmond is charged with aggravated battery for the Sunday incident and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and battery in the Monday matter.

He faces up to 14 years in prison if convicted in both cases, but would also be eligible for probation.
Meyer is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Associate Judge Raymond Collins set bond for both at $100,000 and ordered them to appear in court Aug. 18.

Here's a kid that could have used 4 years in college to mature, mentally and physically. With some added muscle and 4 years to work on his game, he had a real chance to be a 10-year NBA-type guy. I don't know ultimately how good he would have been but he had raw skills and enough size to be an NBA-guy. His life would have been set.

Former Illinois basketball player Jereme Richmond was released on $100,000 bond Friday from the Lake County Jail.

Richmond, 19, a former star at Waukegan High, is due to appear in court on Aug. 18 after being arrested last week on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, battery, disorderly conduct, possession of a firearm and assault.

He was arrested with three other men after a confrontation took place in front of the home of what was reported as the home of a 17-year-old female with whom he had been in a relationship. Police found a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle the men used to drive to the home.

Judge denies Jereme Richmond’s request to travel out of state for NBA recruitment

Former Waukegan High School basketball star Jereme Richmond denied charges of aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, while appearing Wednesday before Lake County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Shanes for arraignment.

Shanes denied a request by defense attorney James Schwarzbach made on behalf of Richmond to allow the 19-year-old to travel out of state to several cities because he is being recruited by NBA teams.

“This is a young man from this locality,” Schwarzbach said. “To not allow him back in [the basketball] court is a different punishment.” Schwarzbach said his client had no prior felonies and “promises” to return for all future court dates.

Shanes denied the request. He did grant a court date for Sept. 19 to get details about which recruiters in which cities want to meet with Richmond. Shanes said he wanted to hear details about how Richmond would get to and from meetings with recruiters.

He is accused of driving to his girlfriend’s Waukegan residence on Aug. 7 with the intention of beating her father up, Assistant State’s Attorney Victor O’Block said. Richmond allegedly beat the female and then returned the following day making threats, O’Block said.

Police found a loaded .40-caliber handgun that was uncased and ready to use, O’Block said.

His trial is scheduled for Oct. 31.

A Lake County judge has again denied Jereme Richmond’s request to attend basketball training sessions out of state while he awaits trial on weapons and aggravated battery charges.

The attorney for Richmond, who played a year at University of Illinois before a failed entry into the NBA draft, was rebuffed last week by Judge Daniel Shanes, who told Richmond to resubmit his request in writing.

This time, Richmond’s attorney, Lawrence Wade, presented the judge with an email he said was from former Chicago Bulls player Craig Hodges, now an part-time coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, who said he sees potential in Richmond and wants him to be able to join other prospective NBA players in several player-organized mini-camps around the country.

“It is a unique opportunity to offer him something that the YMCA here in Waukegan would not offer him,” Wade said. “We all understand the gravity of the charges. We are trying to give Mr. Richmond an opportunity to pursue a career in the NBA.”

Richmond, 19, a former star at Waukegan High School, was arrested on Aug. 8 after, according to court records and authorities, he confronted and threatened his ex-girlfriend and her family in front of their Waukegan home.

Authorities said a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun was found in the vehicle he arrived in. In a restraining order granted for the girlfriend and her family, the girlfriend accuses Richmond of hitting her, dragging her by her hair and spitting on her the day prior to Richmond’s arrest.

Richmond faces charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, battery, disorderly conduct, possession of a firearm and assault stemming from the altercations.

In court Monday, Wade said his client will enroll in classes and pursue his college degree online while he continues to work out and train for a career in the NBA.

Assistant State’s Attorney Victor O’Block objected to the travel request, arguing that Richmond can pursue his education and his basketball career from Lake County.

“He can take classes online here,” O’Block said. “Mr. Hodges can help him from here.”

The judge agreed, pointing out to Wade that with the NBA lockout in place, team managers “can’t even talk to your client right now, anyway.”

“He can maintain his skills here sufficiently and adequately, rather than playing pickup ball with other players in California,” Shanes said. “Mr. Richmond should work on his case and hopefully it shouldn’t languish too long. The same rules on bond apply to Mr. Richmond as apply to every other person.”

Richmond is due back in court on Oct. 14 for a pretrial hearing. He is out of jail on bond awaiting trial.

Former U of I basketball star Jereme Richmond placed on 24-hour home detention
After allegedly failing to respond to two separate phone calls from a pre-trial compliance officer, former University of Illinois basketball standout Jereme Richmond has been placed on a 24-hour home detention while he awaits trial on weapon and battery charges.

As a condition of his $70,000 bond, Richmond was supposed to be at home between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day, unless previously arranged with a pre-trial officer for an approved reason.

Richmond, 19, of Waukegan, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm, among other charges, after authorities said he confronted and threatened his former girlfriend’s family at their Waukegan home on Aug. 8.

Richmond’s attorney, Lawrence Wade, told Lake County Judge John Phillips during a hearing on Dec. 22 that his client had been in compliance with the conditions of his bond.

“He has indicated that his phone contact has been continuous,” Wade said.

Phillips ordered the 24-hour curfew.

The defense is trying to get weapon charges against Richmond dismissed, after officials conceded that a recording of communication between 911 operators and officers who arrested Richmond had been automatically erased after 30 days. The prosecutor in the case was unavailable on Dec. 22, however, and the hearing was rescheduled for Dec. 30.

Richmond also faces a battery charge stemming from an alleged altercation with his former girlfriend the previous day. According to court documents, he is accused of punching and spitting on her.

Richmond’s co-defendant, Matthew Riley, 22, of North Chicago, was out of jail on $100,000 bond, on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. However, on Dec. 12, he was re-arrested and remanded back to the Lake County Jail for intent to manufacture or deliver cocaine and possession of a controlled substance.

When ordering Richmond’s curfew, Phillips told him that he could have elected to double or triple his bond and sent him back to jail. Richmond’s bond had been raised to $100,000 after he tested positive for marijuana, then lowered again by Phillips to $70,000.

Richmond, who led Waukegan High School to two state victories and was named Illinois’ Mr. Basketball in 2010, spent one season with the Illini but dropped out in a failed NBA draft bid.

Under the terms of his old 6 p.m.–6 a.m. curfew, Richmond had been allowed to leave home during the day to attend basketball workouts and camps.

“The only thing you have to do now is to stay home, answer the phone and talk to your attorney,” Phillips said.

Ex-Illinois basketball player Jereme Richmond pleaded guilty Monday to gun charges and was sentenced to 1-1/2 years on probation.

As part of a plea agreement with Lake County prosecutors, Richmond, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for the Aug. 8 incident in which a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun was in the back seat of a car he drove.

The gun was uncased and loaded in Richmond’s car when he drove to a Waukegan residence and made threats to use the gun against the family of his ex-girlfriend, prosecutors said.

He was also charged with aggravated battery for beating his ex-girlfriend the day before, but that charge was dropped as part of his plea deal.

In addition to the probation, Richmond was ordered to pay a $500 fine and $3,276 in court costs, perform 200 hours of community service and donate $250 to a shelter for battered and abused women.

If he violates his probation, Richmond could get 6 months in jail.

The former Waukegan High School basketball star is forbidden from drinking alcohol or using drugs while on probation. He tested positive for marijuana while out on bond in October.

Richmond also was ordered not to come within 500 feet of his ex-girlfriend’s home.

Judge John Phillips ordered that Richmond undergo evaluations for substance abuse, anger management and domestic violence.

“You are obviously a talented young man. I hope you make it through probation,” Phillips told Richmond.
