Lots of Mugsey Bouges-like players skating around the ice these days?

You can catch only the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter and not have missed anything.

Sorry. You must not have read the other thread. Ivan clearly stated that you are not allowed to bring up other sports when discussing why basketball sucks so much. Just state the reasons why it sucks, there is no reason to drag other sports into this.

I don't think hockey guys even know how to count, so don't worry about keeping score.

Basketball fans can't even spell their sport's name.

There are exceptions to this statement for sure, but your point is a fairly good one. Guys that play hockey are for the most part fairly average in size. Most guys that play NBA Basketball literally stand out in a crowd. I don't know that it makes Basketball suck, unless you are lamenting the average persons opportunity to aspire to a future as an NBA player. If thats it, I guess it's a fair statement. For me it's not Basketball that sucks, but the NBA that sucks. It's filled with greedy bastards that are allowed to travel and carry the ball on almost every posession. It has influenced kids to the point where most kids now handle tha ball as poorly as the NBA stars they admire. I wish referees had the stones to call the game according to the rules and call it the same for the stars as they might for any rookie coming into the league. The fact they don't is a shame.

The NBA/NHL argument is lame. The NBA is more popular because basketball is 1000X easier to play and therefore easier to relate to.

Plus you only need a park (used for free) and a basketball (fairly cheap) to purchase to play basketball. To play hockey you need equiptment that can cost a couple thousand dollars plus unless you play on a pond in the winter you have to pay for the kid to play on a team, which involves the cost of all the ice time for games/practices which costs a lot as well.

There was a study a couple years ago or so that showed hockey to have one of the most affluent and "smart" fan base.

Don't believe it for a second.

Canadians/Mobile Homes/Mullets don't scream smart to me

Racist people tend to be more affluent.

These afluent fans don't seem to spend as much money on their "sport" as the other major sports for some reason. Doesn't sound very "smart" to me to not support ones dying league...

That makes sense. If you look at the better teams in Illinois, they are predominantly from the more affluent North Shore area. As far as smart....the reason they are afflent is probably in large part due to the fact they were well educated, which led to higher paying jobs. The fact that their kids play hockey a lot is likely a factor in them becoming fans of the game in general. Of course if they grew up playing, it's also pretty natural.

Hockey is perhaps the one sport that is most difficult to be great at. Kids of any size can play it, so nobody has any edge there.. You need speed, agility, great hand/eye coordination and strength. Plus, you need to do everything required in the game while on a thin blade of steel. Basketball...if you are tall you immediately have a decided advantage over most guys. But many of the tall guys (especially centers) are not very agile, but a lumbering oaf with such poor hand/eye coordination that they can't even make a respectable # of free throws. You see kids in grade school that can shoot free throws better than many NBA stars. When little kids can do something fundamental in a sport better than the professionals do it, you know there's a problem.
