Always wonder why Billy B dumps a guy? He doesn't dump them for character issues?

I know they usually have talent, but this is surprising?

How many of the guys he cuts loose go on to experience success elsewhere? I can't really think of any.

Ty Law is all I can think of.

Lawyer Milloy wasn't terrible after he was gone.

This is what you can do when you draft well! You can tell guys like Briggs, see ya! At the last second!

Not that Briggs would not find a new deal, but cutting a guy after Pre-week4, really fucks how much money they are going to get

Quote:
As for Meriweather, it’s surprising the Patriots didn’t try to trade him earlier at a higher value, or at least deal with him for one more season and let him leave via free agency, recouping a compensatory pick. Now they get nothing.

And the Patriots didn’t try hard to trade him yesterday. A dozen NFL teams said they had not heard Meriweather was on the trading block.

Belichick won’t say it, but his actions - or inactions - say everything: He just wanted Meriweather gone.

Why? Put aside the gun incident, the rap album, and the fact that he showed up slightly out of shape this year. Meriweather just never progressed from the time he arrived as the 24th overall pick.

His preparation was spotty, and that showed up on the field. Meriweather was always a step behind in his reads. And without his mentor, James Sanders, around, it wasn’t going to improve.

The Patriots could deal with Meriweather’s shortcomings when the rest of the defense and secondary was young, and Belichick was forced to play safe coverages.

But not this year. Not with this scheme.

The Patriots are intent on being an aggressive, pressure defense. They will only be successful if they can play more man coverage on the outside, and that gives greater responsibilities to the safeties. Meriweather would no longer just be the last line of defense.

The Bears desperately needed improvement at the position, so this signing makes sense from that point of view. You really do have to limit how many of these types of players you get on your team (off the field stuff) otherwise you turn yourself into the Bengals. Hopefully the shooting incident changes who he hangs out with and how he lives his lifestyle.

Coach hoodie is an odd egg. They have cut productive players before, so I wouldn't read into that. But the idea that he is slated as the starter as soon as he learns the defense is a reach. He's not so bright.

At worst it's a depth move that needed to be made.

The Patriots have been an average drafting team for several years.

Didn't he go to the Pro Bowl every year including last year? He will be the starter with Chris Harris because they obviously think Major Wright is a major piece of shit.

Couple different things I read said Meriweather definitely deserved to be a Pro Bowler (not that kind of bowler, Murph) in 2009, but not at all in 2010, FWIW.

Asante Samuel has been a Pro Bowler for the Eagles.

To a certain extent he had to go, but Matt Cassel has also been very good at times.

So are the Bears ready to dump Major Wright on the scrap heap of Bears #1 draft picks?
It really is amazing how good the Bears have been given Angelos terrible drafting.

He was a 3rd round pick. Upgrading to a pro bowl guy is a great thing. The secondary is clearly the weak link in the Bears defense. It just got a little stronger.
