Brian Urlacher rushed out of town Tuesday to attend to a family emergency in Arizona involving his mother, the Tribune has learned.

Urlacher is expected to be away from the Bears for several days and his status for Sunday’s game against the Saints is unclear. Teammates, the coaching staff and members of the front office are aware of Urlacher’s situation but no further information was available Tuesday night.

The Bears took Monday and Tuesday off following Sunday’s 30-12 season-opening victory over the Falcons in which Urlacher scored a touchdown on a fumble return and intercepted a Matt Ryan pass. He also had 10 tackles.

Urlacher’s mom, Lavoyda, maintained a regular presence in the life of the man Lovie Smith referred to as the Bears’ “franchise player.’’ She raised Brian and younger brother Casey and older sister, Sheri, in Lovington, N.M. The family remained close as Urlacher’s career soared in Chicago. Lavoyda was living in Mount Pleasant, Texas, near the Louisiana border.

It's way too early in the week for him to miss the game. He is not Derek Lee. He is not going to take a week off.

I would think that unless she dies over the weekend, he should play. Hopefully everything works out for the best for the family.

Just wait until day 3 when Favre stands outside the mortuary and bellows out "Lavoyda come forth!!"

Linebacking depth is the Bears achilles. If Urlacher is out I assume Roche moves to MLB and Iwuh plays strong side. I have no confidence that will work against a strong offense like the Saints.

Yeah. And at 8:15am when I posted, I didn't know that.

Urlacher's mom got married at age 16 and had three kids by the time she was 19. Wow!

She worked 3 jobs to support her kids and was only 51 when she died. Sad story.

The "throwing a hot dog down a hallway" kind?

Yep. A hard working woman who finally got to enjoy some of the good life and it gets taken from her.

I think he plays.

Sports custom seems to be that you play through death and illness, but not childbirth. Remember Shaquille O'Neal running through the parking lot at game time after his grandmother's funeral? Favre's things were more recent, botha death and his wife's breast cancer. I can't remember if Jordan's father's murder was during the season, but the tradition is to play. The tradition also is to have a great game.

It could be different for Urlacher. Either his relationship with his mother or problems occurring in the family at this death make his play impossible. If that's the case, that's the case. He can't be open to complaint on it. It's too personal.

A thought I heard on the Score today was that the Bears team attend the service in Texas as part of the trip to New Orleans, and then obviously bring him along to N.O. for the game. The kind of thing that makes for a good story and a good morale boost for the team and Urlacher.

It seems to be only baseball players that have the birth problem. It doesn't bother football players. Besides, how could a football player ever hit the field if he took off for every birth he caused?

I think he will play and for the record apparently she died on Tuesday not Monday.

The Cardinals fans showed up and threw teddy bears at Soldier Field.

I remember Brian saying one of the nicest things of his fame and fortune was all the nice things he could do for his Mom.

A few years ago Cardinals fans were throwing teddy bears at Busch Stadium when Darryl Kile died which just seemed weird. So I figure they just show up and hurl teddy bears when people died.

"Throwing teddy bears..." Awesome new euphemism.

ex: Ugie likes to throw teddy bears by candle lite.

Brian Urlacher is back at Halas Hall today. It remains to be seen if he'll practice, but all indications continue pointing at #54 playing Sunday in New Orleans.
