Not necessarily a bad thing.

If not for Jerry, the Sox would've had Cito Gaston last time.

1) The owners don't care. They just want to cash a check! Why isn't Ricketts doing more! Why isn't he making changes!
2) The owners are meddling. They want to be too involved! Jerry has to approve the manager! Why is he involved in making changes!

JR gets his rocks off negotiating contracts. It makes him feel young. The only instances he gets to do it these days is when he hires management.

I don't think anyone wants Tom Ricketts involved in baseball operations.

 It's not a shot at bigfan. It's just a thread that shows that Cubs fans are losing in faith in Ricketts for not being involved enough with Crane Kenney, Hendry, Quade whereas Aptly Named Sox Fan Bob is mad that Jerry Reinsdorf wants to be involved in the search for a new manager.

i would assume every team in baseball that makes a managerial , the g.m. has to run that hire by the owner

Yeah maybe to some extent, but I highly doubt that, say, whichever Nintendo sinecure babysits the Mariners overrides his GM because He Was At Ebbets Field The Day Jackie Broke The Color Line and is thus qualified to make baseball-ops decisions on his own, cutting his GM's balls clear off and then claiming to love him like a son, chopped balls n' all.

Ricketts should be thankful that The Chairman approved him

100% correct. Doing deals is like Sex to him. This turns out to be a good thing when hiring coaches and GM's as he is a veteran of the process, but is a huge issue when he tries to circumvent the process of agents.

I've always contended that it's a borderline violation of his legal ethics, especially what he did with country dumb shitkickers like Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen.

100% agree. I have heard his position on this. "If these people work for me why can't I talk to them directly", which only applies when re-signing a player, but still these players have agents, that you are aware of, that they have hired to negotiate with.

Then laws exists (correct me if I am wrong here GD) to make sure Horance Grant (Employee) is not cornered in an office by Jerry R (Lawyer) and he agrees on a deal that he thinks is good, but his authorized agent would never advise is good.
