Just heard the announcer on ESPN refer to him as a future Hall of Famer.

Then they listed his stats.

Not 3000 hits.
Not 500 HR.
Just under 1500 RBI.

So what say you baseball bigfoots.

Yea or Nay?

I'd put him in. He's going to finish up hitting above .310. There's probably only about 60 guys with a higher career average.

That's how I felt as well Jeff.

Just surprised that he wasn't above one of the supposed benchmarks for HOF.

Why didn't anyone ever give him the nickname "Vlad the Impaler"?

No. I'll go see him in the 'Hall of the Pretty Damn Good, but not of Fame'.

I think he was juicy, if you'll pardon the expression.

I would say yes, the only reason to watch the Expos when they were around then goes to Anaheim and wins an MVP in 04.

9 time All Star and 8 time Silver Slugger winner

Not many big hits in the playoffs, but did get one off Papelbon to help the Angels sweep the Red Sox.

Without question.

Not a one.

HOF.

Period.

To quote Reents: "9 time All Star, 8 time Silver Slugger". To add on, one of the greatest OF arms in MLB history & a great right fielder. An absolute star....out of Montreal. Also, one of the few players I (still) stop to watch his ABs.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. ;)

That's a good comparison.

A guy who doesn't necessarily have HOF numbers, but deserves to be in anyway.

Distinguished from Don Sutton, Bert Blyleven & Jim Kaat. And maybe Gary Carter as well.

It's kind of a $$$ thing. Would I have paid to see Sutton, Blyleven, Kaat or Carter, no. Not ever. Maybe it's more. Would I have stopped to watch them work (as opposed to Vlad) hell no.

And Vlad had an absolutely killer 10+ years as arguably the best player in the game (as opposed to say Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Alan Trammell...or maybe even Jim Rice or Yaz)

I see nobody (except RR) has mentioned that with the Expos he was one of (if not the) best defensive outfielders in the game.

He got stuck in baseball exile in Montreal for a lot of his prime. If he played in a bigger market-- hell if he played almost anywhere-- he would have gotten a lot more love.

Not first ballot, but HOF for sure.

He's 51 away fom 500 HR's... I imagine he can get there before he retires right? Or is he retiring and that's why we're having this conversation??

Ok, if he plays 2 more years, til 38, he'll be over 500 HR's... with 8 Silver Slugger awards? 9 Allstar games, and an MVP?
no gold gloves, but he's regarded as above average defense. Similar to Jim Rice*, Joe DiMaggio*, Orlando Cepeda*, Willie Stargell*, Larry Walker, Chipper Jones, Andre Dawson*.

With that 500 homer benchmark, I would say it's a shoe in.

I wouldn't count on that, but it shouldn't matter. He was better than guys like Rice and Dawson and a bunch of others.

One of the things I also like to consider in determining HOF is whether he was the best player at his position for an extended period of time in his career. Vlad was the the best player in the game for several season and one of the most feared hitters. He was a complete player
