Ozzie was trying to save him from the dubious record by not playing him, and Dunn finished the season with 496 plate appearances, 6 short of the 502 required for an official season. However, when someone is leading the league in average and comes up short of the 502 necessary PA, there is a rule where they can assume he makes an out in those "missing" PA, and if his average is still highest, he wins the batting title. Well, if you give Dunn 6 hits in the 6 PA he was short, his average goes from .159 to .171, still well below Rob Deer's .179.

Congrats Adam! Worst season in MLB history!

I am amazed that when Kenny Williams offered to resign as GM and go to a scouting position (with Rick Hahn moving to the GM position) that Reinsdorf didn't approve the moves. Williams has cost the team a fortune with the claiming of Rios, the trading for Peavy and the free agent signing of Dunn, all of which were bad moves. Add to that the trade for Edwin Jackson that resulted in the aquisition of an inconsistent starter who makes a lot of money for a younger more consistent one that makes very little money and you have yet another bonehead move. Yet he will preside over the rebuilding of this team and with no chance of moving Dunn, they have to hope that somehow the big lug can rebound from a season that is truely-historically bad.

If you go by Fangraphs' WAR statistic, he had the 12th worst season for a hitter since 1871. Sixth worst in the modern era, post-1900.

Ryan Dunn's MPH was greater than Adam Dunn's BA.
