Coop went to Kenny at the end of August and told him he had an offer from the Royals to be their pitching coach and if Ozzie was going to be here he was leaving. Kenny told Coop Ozzie was a good as gone. Seems the old Oz-Aroo pissed A LOT of people off.

He also said Buehrle's chance of staying is 20% at best. :(

Hopefully I'll have more soon.

Not at all surprised about Buehrle. I figured he was gone to the Cardinals. As far as Cooper goes, the Sox are fortunate to be retaining him. I am curious to see (besides Joey Cora-who I assume goes with Ozzie) who Ozzie will get to coach for him in Tampa. His choice of pitching coach will be especially interesting.

Think another team is making offers during the season to other teams pitching coaches? Especially within the division?

Gonna say you need a new guy

Ozzie's going to Tampa??!!?? How does Joe feel about this??!!?? What are the Miami Marlins going to do? Jack McKeon still alive? BREAKING

Is that bad form? An unwritten rule? Coop's contract was up after the season and if he were to hit the open market he would be in high demand. Why wouldn't a team reach out to him during the season?

Besides from being terrible form, I think it might be against baseball rules while anyone is under contract? Permission must be granted to talk from his current team.

In Ozzies case, the Marlins went to the Sox with an offer last year (How good would a Logan Morrison look now?)

Not saying back channels can not be explored, but an actual offer to a coach on an active staff would never happen.

I didn't list it, but someone else in this thread did, that Coop would fear being called a Rat if something like that went down. Not so much that Ozzie would call him a rat, but players would see him as Kenny Williams boy and Gary Ward can tell you how that went.

You obviously can't offer players contracts but I don't think coaches are held to the same standard. In Ozzie's case he was still under contract for the following season and as I said Coop's contract was expiring after this season.

Coop is Kenny's boy. That's pretty well known. He went to Kenny and said it's me or Ozzie. Coop's still here and Ozzie's gone.

Which is fine

Good pitching coaches are hard to come by.

If that was true wouldn't Dave Martinez have been here for an interview?

Ozzie could have stayed. He played his hand v Jerry R a second time and lost.

I just think it did not go down like your guy said it did. Nothing makes sense.

Why you keep brining up examples that have absolutely nothing to do with this situation?

Coop didn't have a contract after the season. You're the agent wanna-be what would you do? Sit on your hands and wait for the end of the season or find your guy a deal and give him some leverage against Ozzie? As I said Coop's here (with a brand new multi-year contract) and Ozzie's gone. It makes perfect sense (to the sane).

because even though the contract will be up, the contract is not up.

And 100% further proof your guy is wrong. Coop does not have an agent.

Jerry will not talk to agents for people that work for him.

If Coop came to Kenny or Jerry with that story they would flip out, not give him a new 4 year deal. Especially Jerry.

It is irrelevant how many years a coach has left, if they are under contract during the season, then they are under contract.

I don't know it is a fact, but I would be really surprised to hear that teams can make offers or even talk to other teams coaches during the season.

Are you sure Don Cooper doesn't have an agent? Isn't this his picture on a Sports Representation Company website?

You think Coop live from Cork and Kerry just comes in off the street. That takes a powerful representative.

I think bigfan is correct. If they had talked to him or his agent before the contract was up I think there would be both MLB and civil penalties to pay.

Doesn't it get old Frank?

This is really not a Sox issue, this would be a MLB issue, but I know it is the Sox section, which I need written permission from Frank to comment in.

Don't think any coaches can talk to teams during the season.

Convenient how you responded minutes after someone agreed with you (and avoided the whole not having an agent thing).

I'm sure this is the first time in the history of baseball that a team contacted a coach during the season about a potential coaching vacancy. The bastards!

Well the topic moved to the ACTIVE TOPICS, so I responded.

Do back channels exist, not even a question. Do they actually make offers???? no way! At most a "Tell him we would be interested"

Having or not having an agent, was not the issue. I am telling you Jerry does not do deals with agents for any of his coaches for anything. If you want to shop your services with an agent, feel free to, you will not be with the Sox or The Bulls is Jerry's view on this. I have heard it and seen it first hand.

Why do you think Ozzie met with Jerry? and not Ozzies agent?

However, it does make it hard sometimes to deal with coaches who have agents and every other owner talks to the agent,

This is why D'Antoni is head coach of the Knicks. He was willing to talk to Jerry but he wanted his agent to negotiate. Jerry said no, D'antoni went and signed with the knicks. He didnt tell Jerry NO thank You, he just went and did it.

Jerry wants guys that work for him to 'Drop their pants" for him. You are not playing Jerrys offer against another. Either you are with him or good bye.

This is why I am telling you it never happened like you said. If Jerry even got a hint of Cooper saying he had interest from KC, he would be gone in a second.

Could Jerry have changed the way he has been doing business now for almost 30 years, sure I guess, but I doubt Don Cooper was the exception.

Yeah, Don Cooper doesn't seem like the type of guy to have a few and say "I told Kenny that was gone if Ozzie was still here"

and I am sure Jerry made the one exception to his business model to keep Don Cooper here?

So you have some guy who claims he knows or spoke to Don Cooper and Coop claims he told Kenny , it's either him or me???

Yet, it is a known fact Jerry would never take well to such 'demand', but yet when Don Cooper did it, Jerry said OK?

And Did Harold do the same thing to get his 4 year deal? While he was crying about Ozzie leaving?

Yeah my guy talked to Coop. Coop didn't have to demand (your word not mine) anything because Kenny told him Ozzie was as good as gone. Did you not read that in my original post or are you purposely trying to be dense?

I don't know how it went down with Harold but why don't you tell us as you seem to be the expert on all things White Sox and Jerry Reinsdorf's business model.

Cooper is an asshole. He might have told Keyser's guy but he was probably exaggerating.

I highly doubt Don Cooper is making organizational moves thru his Kansas City threat.

And is Cooper even good? Whats the evidence? Seems he has had his success and failures just like every other pitching coach.

Hey Keyser, what does your guy say about your beloved White Cubs being under .500 against the American League and within the Mighty A.L. Central the last 3 seasons? How about Kenny Hendry's recent brilliant moves?

That is just a start to make your opinion look foolish. These were all scrap heap guys well into their careers. Two became Cy Young caliber under him. The third became possibly the best left handed set up man in the game. The fourth was a career AAA pitcher who won 9 games and had an ERA in the mid 3s. You can point to a guy just about every year who ends up having a significant career divergence when he gets taught by Cooper.

This evidence does not even consider the work he has done in developing Floyd, Danks, Santos, Sale. Even if you take Danks out of the equation, as he was a major prospect flying up through the minors who was MLB ready when he arrived, Floyd, Santos and Sale are rather remarkable jobs.

Don't forget about Jon Garland in '05 and '06.

Sure there have been some misses, but Cooper as hit far more than he has missed. Also, Coop being an insufferable prick has nothing to do with how good of a pitching coach he is.
