Apple has announced that Sprint will finally get the iPhone, making it the third U.S. wireless carrier to offer Apple’s flagship device.

Starting Oct. 14, Sprint will begin carrying the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. We expect the new iPhone to sell for $200 with a two-year contract, in line with the prices AT&T and Verizon Wireless charge. For that price, Sprint’s line of iPhones will come with unlimited data plans, a key difference from its competitors.

On Monday, we learned that Sprint was making a $20 billion bet on the iPhone. It has agreed to purchase at least 30.5 million iPhones in the next four years — more than its current postpaid subscriber base of 27+ million. It’s a risky move that will make a big dent on the bottom line until at least 2014.

However, Sprint now has the iPhone, a weapon it needed to stay competitive. Now it must find a way to poach customers from other carriers and sell 30+ million iPhones in the new few years. Otherwise, it could collapse under the financial pressure of its deal with Apple. Sprint is getting the iPhone, but it paid a hefty price to do so.

If they stay unlimited for their current unlimited prices I will probably get one.

iPhone 3GS (the phone I have) is now free with a new 2 year contract. iPhone 4 is only $99.

Agreed. Not because I don't like them but because I drop my phone at least 5 or 6 times a day. I've never had a cracked screen or any of the other issues I KNOW I'll have with them. I plan on getting one of those 3D phones as soon as they offer me a discount in a couple months.

Buy a case.

And if you have an issue with an iPhone that isn't caused by you, go to an Apple store and they will replace it for you. They always do.

Why? I haven't had to do that with any other Sprint phone. Even when I had a blackberry that wasn't a problem. Apple isn't going to give me a phone because I dropped it 5 times today from an average of 4'. Good news is my phone didn't break. The Iphone will.

Most of the time it's great. There are days "once a month" that you want to throw your phone out the window because of the service. They'll give you credits and stuff for it so in the end it's not that bad.

Why? So you can have a good phone and it doesn't break. That's why you buy a case.

And Blackberrys are bad phones. The 3D phones will all break when you drop them as well, FWIW.

But nonetheless, you speak, Apple listens:

Piss poor battery life
The fact that people have to keep going to Apple Stores because of a problem the user didn't cause
The ridiculous price for what appears to be a substandard product.
I've had 2 phones over the last 2 and a half years or so. My Blackberry didn't give me a problem until the track ball crapped out right in time for my Sprint upgrade.
I didn't splurge on an Android capable phone or anything, but I did get an LG that has mp3 capabilities, as well as internet connectivity and a GPS. No apps necessary.

I never have a noticable problem or dropped calls. Every now and again, I will hit a dead zone.

Prices just went down. You can get a 3Gs for free, 4 for $99 or 4S for $199. Battery life is going up even more on the 4S, but yes, that's easily the worst part about the iPhone.

2 phones over 2 years is pretty average, and I don't think it would be any more if you had an iPhone. I've had my iPhone 4 since it came out and haven't had a single problem, nor have I had to take it to the Apple store.

Have you ever had an iPhone, or are you just assuming it's a shitty product? Yes blackberrys are way cheaper but they are really inferior, hence why the company is going to disappear soon. But if you think a regular BB is a better phone than an iPhone, we are obviously looking for different things in a phone. Oh well.

Personally owned, no...close family and friends with them do nothing but bitch.

I'm not saying a blackberry is better, all I was saying is that I wasn't having the problems others reported in them.

More than anything, I'm anti-Apple as a whole. I don't need iTunes...I have Amazon's mp3 store and Windows Media Player, which perfectly suit my needs.

Not true. Blackberry and RIM are deeply embedded in corporate America. For emailing and Outlook integration there is no better device. They may lose market share but they aren't going to disappear.

Just a note to follow up on this, RIM dropped 5 percentage points:

And Vodafone may be interested in purchasing them as well:

Pretty sure I'm one of five people who own a BlackBerry by choice and not because they got it from work...and I really do loathe Apple...

...that being said, I can't call it crap hardware...my iPod touch has treated me very well and I have yet to figure out how you break one of these things...I don't drop it five or six times a day, but it has taken more than a dozen spills over the year or so I've had it and it's no any worse for the wear.

That being said, I still wouldn't want an iPhone, in fear of showing up on damnyouautocorrect.com :P

Maybe it will be as good as the new droids.

Their ability to do incremental updates (copy/past, 8mp camera, an antenna that works, camera on the Ipad etc) and push them out under the guise of an all new super product shortly after (shortly in product development/cycle terms) that needs its own press conference is amazing. Even more amazing is that the public eats it up and goes and buys these things, even while under the present Iphone and contract. Apple is or was great with marketing and presentation and design but the product cadence and the, usually, unwarranted craziness that goes along with it is even more unbelievable.

I don't hate the Iphone or anything, they are good products but this shit just gets silly.

They hardly, if ever, have major releases of the same product that soon. Especially with how much they love the way this phone looks/is made. They'll ride it out before switching it up.

There is going to a lot of pressure on them to release something soon called an iPhone 5. There are already thoughts that post-Steve Jobs Apple is going to struggle. Releasing a phone that basically adds voice recognition is not moving forward enough in my opinion.

If this phone was called the iPhone 5, it would have been fine. They added a lot of speed, better camera, HD video, much better hardware, made it a world-phone and most importantly, iOS 5 which is a huge deal, IMO (Siri being a part of that too).

I do agree that Apple didn't manage expectations very well, they probably should have put iPhone 5 rumors to rest... but at the same time, they have pretty much now established there will be a major release, then an "S" release and so on.

That's great, but it only really caught up to the droid on those things. The iPhone used to lead. Now, outside of siri I don't think it does that.
