For six years, the Score’s Chris Rongey has handled pregame and postgame duties for the White Sox, dealing with irate fans on a nightly basis. He also has filled in on several broadcasts, doing play-by-play. So why is it that any conversation with the man they call “The Ranger’’ eventually turns to the fact that he once dated former NBC weather gal Ginger Zee? Sounds like an Interrogation Room.

Joe Cowley: Do you read books by Dr. Drew and Dr. Phil so you can deal with suicidal Sox fans?

Chris Rongey: No, I’m better than they are.

JC: Why did it seem like there was a lot of Rongey hate this season?

CR: Well, now I’m starting to feel bad for myself. If people did or do, it’s because I wasn’t really ready to say everyone involved was stupid. When things don’t go according to plan, people feel there has to be fault. It came down to three people that were very important not doing their job. You can’t win when the projected two, three and four hitters [Gordon Beckham, Alex Rios and Adam Dunn] aren’t producing.

JC: Most memorable call you’ve ever taken?

CR: There’s a guy named Rocco, and he talks just like someone from the South Side should talk. I think he says absurd things, but his voice is so amazing, I don’t even care.

JC: Play-by-play, that’s hopefully the end game for you, correct?

CR: That’s the ultimate goal. I love the pace of baseball. I love everything about the intimacy with the broadcaster and the listener.

JC: Doesn’t the fact that you dated Ginger Zee help the single-guy resumé? It’s like a degree from Harvard Law.

CR: Maybe you should ask her that question about me.

JC: What about that minority that says you outkicked your coverage?

CR: If you can consistently out-kick your coverage, at some point that just becomes your coverage, doesn’t it?

JC: Could you ever be a weather guy?

CR: No, I’m not good with the green screen. Plus, my basic knowledge of weather is open the door and look.

JC: Oh, you know weather, trust me.

CR: The ins and the outs.

I had a conversation with the guy about a year ago. I didn't even realize it was him until the end. I thought he was just another board creep.

I was reaching and just looking to rip Kenny when i said he could have had Rios a lot cheaper if he kept Young.

Then it turned into a who is better situation. Once Young started hot last year...Rongey stopped replying.
