Im positive this won't happen, so this is pretty much just hypothetical. But I actually agree with Bernstein and the emailer today that said if Forte started holding out right now, it might be his best chance to secure a long term deal instead of being forced to accept a franchise tag the next year or two. He's clearly proved his worth by now and the Bears would either have to pay him or miss the playoffs this year.

that tactic would probably force the bears to pay him quickly but if angelo called his bluff the fan base would turn quickly on him and his teammates would not like him bailing mid season.

You could, but it's pretty doubtful you'd get far.

Sure. He could do this. He won't though. If he did the Bears would most certainly stick it to him with a franchise tag instead of giving him the long deal with the huge signing bonus that he wants.

He's also not gonna do it cuz he just wouldn't do this to his teammates.

I'm fine with the Bears just franchise tagging him for 2 straight years and then letting him go cuz of the wear and tear at that point.

Ya know, people love to bash Angelo but how about some credit for the Forte pick. He was a mid 2nd rounder out of TCU. Pretty damn good and pretty damn cheap for 4 years.

forte was a nice pick...that draft was loaded though, almost hard to miss on a back or a tackle in that draft..but angelo missed on williams ...i wanted the bears to trade up and get flacco n mendenhall that season

Tulane, not TCU.

It won't happen because he respects his teammates too much. There is no other capable back to block on pass protect...

Just like we heard about Kreutz for all those years and he bailed in the middle of the season...

Um... He'd been around those teammates for what 2 months? Idk how much authentic respect could realistically be gained in that time period...

Respect and leadership are just buzz words in football... they mean nothing. When people are winning and playing well everything is great when the team is losing and playing poorly they are bad leaders or not respected. He wouldnt quit in the middle of the season because it hurts his chances to get bigger money and long term deals. It has nothing to do with how he feels about his teammates.

Life doesn't exist in such black and white paradigms... Sorry. I know sports doesn't help this line of thought...

The Bears are going to franchise him twice and he will be pissed both times. Big deal. He'll still play hard and just miss all of training camp up to the day where he couldn't sign the offer.

That takes him through year 6. How many RB are all that good in years 7+.

Highly doubtful this will happen... 2 consecutive franchise tags have never happened with the Bears...

Charles Woodson disagrees.

With the raiders? He has to be the only one.

I don't remember the Bears ever franchising anyone, including Lance Briggs before he signed an extension that in hindsight he probably wishes he hadn't signed. They've always used a transition tag on a player if memory serves.

If that's true than the Bears need to start finding a replacement this offseason or hope that Cutler becomes consistent enough to carry the offense without Forte.

J is a good guy. There are plenty of people on this site who would dig their heels in and defend their position to the death even in the face of unassailable evidence to the contrary.
