My wife and I each have an iPhone 4. We upgraded to ios 5 over the weekend. When sending texts via iMessage, it seems only half are actually sent as iMessages while the others are sent as regular texts.

The messages are between iPhones over 3G, so why aren't they all iMessages?

This is happening between our own iPhones. They're both upgraded.

It's easy to see...blue bubble = iMessage, green bubble = text.

You could go into the settings and turn off the Send as SMS and see what happens...

That would disable texting, yes?

Well just try it temporarily, iMessage will still work with it off... Maybe with it off you can establish a path between you and your wife with iMessage and then turn SMS back on for everyone else...

From what I can determine, it looks like the message gets sent as a text when "the iMessage server is unavailable.". So far it has been "unavailable" for half of my messages.

:?

I don't know much about the imessage, but if you try my suggestion you might be able to pigeonhole the problem, or maybe it'll make things infinitely worse :P

Edit: or maybe its just a server thing, either way, if you turn off the sms, you might be able to get more info...

I've also been having some trouble communicating with my wife. However, her operating system is less like iOS 5 and more like iWillFuckingKillYourLazyAssIfYouDon'tDoTheLaundry 3

This is Blackberry Messenger? Cool.

I'm surprised Apple didn't release another I-Phone to showcase this feature.

So I've found a friend that also updated, and used this back and forth a bit last night. Its certainly not revolutionary...you could see if the text went through / was read, and when the other person is typing. But its still texting.

But it does not (not supposed to be anyway) get sent as a text message via your cell carrier, thus saving you money on texts.

Sorry you can't afford an unlimited text plan.
