I love heavyweight boxing and this guy was an all-timer. Just watch any of his fights on film
and you'll love his style. The verbal and mental abuse he was subjected to during the Ali fights
was pretty extreme. Frazier wasn't a real smart man but a crafty fighter in the ring. RIP Joe.

It might be hard for younger guys to understand how the Ali-Frazier fights were viewed by Americans in their time. I don't think you could have found a brother outside Frazier's own family that was pulling for him. And Frazier was the champion of the white middle class households like my own.

My dad saw Ali as a draft dodger and a big mouth. And although both guys were black, Frazier didn't threaten white America. Ali represented everything the WWII generation was afraid of. Of course, for my friends and I- white and black- Ali was cool in the same way the ABA and Joe Namath were cool.

As great as he was as a boxer, Ali was probably better as a promoter. Frazier took all that stuff seriously and hated Ali calling him a gorilla and painting him as an Uncle Tom. He never got over it. Maybe that's why it worked so well. Often you'll see two guys snarling at each other during a weigh-in and it's obvious that they're really winking, not much different than pro wrestling.

Anyone who saw the 30 for 30, "The Real Rocky" saw Ali tell Mike Douglass that Wepner called him a genius. In fact, he actually wanted Wepner to call him that and Wepner refused. Ali just saw that as promoting the fight. I don't think he gave a lot of thought to how the roles might stick to the participants long after the fights.

You'd be surprised at how wrong you are there. As I get older, it seems funnier and funnier to me as well. There were thousands of upwardly mobile people of color who absolutely couldn't stand Ali. Many thought he was an embarrassment to the race and would hinder any progress they potentially could make by abiding by the rules of the system.

I grew up in a split household. My (moderate Democrat) dad didn't care for Ali until late in the game, but my progressive mother was a huge fan. Watching them come from watching the fights was priceless.

I am surprised to hear that. All the black guys I grew up with were Ali guys. But like I said, most of us were (at least the guys I wanted to be friends with ). Athletes who always did "the right thing" and refused to step out of line were for old guys.

I think it's funny that Pete Rose, the hero of the conservative white guy, turned out to be about as big a scumbag as one can be. And it's even funnier to hear those guys twist themselves into pretzels in his defense.

As a white teen growing up in the 60s I was a big Ali fan, because of the flair he brought to the boxing game. But I always appreciated the skill and athleticism that Smokin' Joe brought to the Sweet Science. I hated the ways Ali taunted and insulted him. I used to go to the theater and watch all the close circuit bouts that were not on ABC. To this day the greatest fight I ever saw was The Thrilla in Manila. Both men nearly died that night, but boxing surely did.

In the terms of my generation, Joe Frazier was "a man's man"

My word guys! that was a time of innocence,it was great boxing! All our dads were Archie Bunker and George jefferson, but we loved it as great entertainment. Not worried about concussions , just worried about our enjoyment. Damn I miss those days
