Paterno is really giving off a "shit happens " type of attitude despite the official statements

Maybe that's how he feels. It would really explain a lot...

The more you hear him the more you almost have to come to that conclusion.

And if he stays on with this team throughout the remainder of the season just imagine how many stupid ignorant comments will get made by him.

I thought the deal was he was in fact staying on until the end of the season .... no?

I wanna hear what this old fuckwit is going to say in the following weeks; it's the only entertainment I can imagine deriving from the rest of their football season.

I am not really sure if that is Paterno's deal or the trustee's deal or anyone's deal. I am sure that is what Paterno wants. Maybe we will know more after this swift meeting on Friday

Totally. There is a vast difference between the official statements and what he's really saying. I just have a hard time believing he could actually be as callous and nonchalant as he sounds. I can't see how they could let him coach another day except it's all the same people that let it happen in the first place.

Read the 23 page grand jury indictment. I was sympathetic to Joe Pa before I read it. Not so much afterwards. But I still keep going back to this guy may indeed have dimentia. The whole thing is just sad.

He's supposed to have a press conference today where he tells people that McQueary gave him vague details about the incident and never explicitly said that he caught Sandusky raping a boy. So there goes McQueary too under the bus. It would be hard for him to continue there especially in his role as recruiting coordinator.

Did he really need him to say, "JOE, HE WAS FUCKING HIM IN THE ASS!!!"?

Like MUD, after reading the Report I'm less sympathetic to Paterno. The fact that Sandusky suddenly retired not long after the first investigation leads me to believe that Paterno just wanted to wash his hands of the situation like Pilate. I could see him saying to the AD something like, "Jerry is a sicko. We can't have him around here anymore." And the AD telling him he'd take care of it. I don't think Paterno tried to cover up for his friend. But Paterno was the Big Guy. He had a moral duty to do more. Instead he just wanted to get back to coaching football without worrying about something that he saw- right up until late yesterday- as just a bad thing that happened and the program had to move past.

But if someone had posted a topic in this forum two months ago that said "Paterno should retire", there would have been a whole lot of people- including some who are blasting him in light of what we know now- who said he deserved to go out the way he wanted to, on his own time and on his own terms. I still don't believe Paterno was a bad man and I truly believe a thirty year old or a forty year old or a fifty year old Paterno would have handled things differently. Not that there aren't sharp 75 year olds, but he clearly wasn't. People have been joking about him for a long time. He shouldn't have been in the position he was in when those decisions had to be made. He wasn't capable.

Maybe...It's possible that he knew back then. At the very least his family is letting him talk like an idiot now which leads me to believe they really don't think there is anything wrong. It's possible he could comprehend but did not want to deal with it. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt here. He seems like an asshole.

Fair enough. I'm sure he is an asshole. I would guess most guys running major college football programs are. That still doesn't make him someone who aided and abetted child rape. But the fact is, his inaction yielded the same result as if he were. And he has to live with that. Sadly, so do those kids.

I think the aided and abetted angle is debatable. It sounds like he was pretty sure what was going on in 1999 and all doubt was removed in 2002. After that, he told Sandusky not to be with kids "on the campus". That sounds a lot like "go do that somewhere else, I don't want to see it or hear about it.

All this kinda makes the Tressel thing look a little silly. But the same principle remains... the guy at the top has an obligation to know what is going on... and to address things harshly on even the "appearance" of any mis-doings.
