Jeff Rapp Talked to a well-placed source tonight who says Ron Zook is out. The decision already has been made at Illinois. Guess no faith of UW upset.

What a waste of time Zook has been.

What would an upset of UW prove about Zook? The guy has been terrible since day 1. Must have the worst winning percentage of any coach with 6 years at a school EVER.

Im not seeing that rumor anywhere, but I was expecting Petrino to get the keys to the car at some point. But with the way that the offense has sputtered this year, I'm not sure that will happen.

I could see Vic Koenning getting a shot - the defense has been good enough to be an 8-2/9-1 team right now

Zook had a chance to build on the success of last year and reinvigorate the fan base with a big 8-10 win season this year. He failed.

Illinois needs new blood in the recruiting game and on the sidelines.

I know people are wanting Zook to go, but you think about it, he did get this team to the Rose Bowl one year.

I will say this on Zook and his time at Illinois, when he had Juice, this is about 2008 and I thought Juice was playing the best at quarterback in the Big 10, then they went to play Western Michigan in Ford Field, lost and missed a bowl game and never got it going until last season.

Then had a good start, but now it's fallen apart, if Zook is gone, besides some of the suggestions, you will probably hear the names Mike Leach and Rich Rodriguez.

I think the Rodriguez experiment wont happen again in the Big ten. He failed at Michigan - I dont see why another team would take a chance on him. if you cant win at michigan with the people you can recruit....you are in trouble.

Mike Leach should be hired as the head football coach for the Illini.

He's 20 games under .500 with only two winning seasons. It's obvious that the teams that did win, did so in spite of him, not because of him.

And now Spiegel is on the Mike Leach bandwagon.

I think Irish Boy's head will explode if Ron Zook gets fired and Danny Hope saves his job by making a bowl game.

I heard that, Scorehead. I think it's wishful thinking, especially when you consider the whole Texas Tech incident involving the son of ESPN's Craig James and that book that also got Bruce Feldman fired from ESPN.com and has since resurfaced at CBSSports.com.

I bet there will be other high-profile coaching jobs opening up in the coming months at other schools across America. I have my doubts that Leach would be interested in the potential vacancy in Champaign.

Something else I've heard today. The SCORE's Kerry Sayers reported in one of her updates that Ron Zook threatened to cut his presser short today if talk of his future was brought up. Testy, testy...

Looks like Zooker did just that...Guess he got a question toward the end of the presser that he didnt like....The end is near for Ron Zook.

They didn't belong in the Rose Bowl though and it was apparent by how bad they got beat. There were better teams out there that deserved a BCS bid but the Rose Bowl has to keep its "precious" tradition of PAC-12 vs. Big Ten. Only reason TCU made the Rose Bowl last year is because the BCS bowls agreed that they would rotate who has to take the non-AQ team.

What team deserved it over Illinois?

As I barely remember the 1983 season (when they got whooped even worse), that was the greatest season in my lifetime. Better than the Sugar Bowl season.

Thank Zook for that.

Missouri, they beat Illinois earlier that season.

Does it pay $18 million?

Is it one of the BCS bowls?

My whole point is Illinois only got into the Rose Bowl because of technicalities, not because of actually earning it.

That Penn State loss was the deal breaker I bet. Just a terrible way to lose.

Illinois had just won 4 games in a row including a road win against the undefeated, #1 team in the country, a team that had won 20 Big Ten games in a row.

Missouri had just lost by 3 touchdowns to a 2-loss Oklahoma team for the 2nd time.

I think we all can admit that Ohio State team was overrated. They got drilled by LSU.

I predicted Illinois as a 7-5 or 6-6 team, & that's exactly what they will be. Thoughts of the Illini going 9-3 or 8-4 were just tainted with orange & blue kool aid. Zook is a lousy coach, but there have also been numerous off the field player incidents that have been swept under the rug & buried.
Fire this goof & hire Mike Leach.

Wasn't Missouri ineligible because only 2 teams from a BCS conference can make the BCS?

So, what other team should have made it?

There best LB just got shot the other day and is out for the season now.

Everyone always knew Zook sucked, this year people were hoping that the OC/DC would take them to the top, in spite of Zook. But it turns out that the OC sucks, too.

I'm really not sure what happened on offense. Between Jenkins, Scheelhaase, an experienced O-line, and a decent backfield, they should be doing better. Is it the coaching? I haven't seen enough games to really be sure. Dr. Ken?

They can't run the ball. That was somewhat apparent in the earlier easy games. They got away with it against a step-up in competition when Jenkins went crazy on crossing routes. The defenses figured out that Ford couldn't do anything but run inside and fumble. The O always picked up with Pollard because he had the speed to take it outside with some option but that only works for so long. They took the crossing routes away and that was it. I don't know what happened to Scheelhaase. O'Toole looked better running the offense the past month than Scheelhaase.

Even so, the defense has yet to lose a game. This is an 8 or 9 win team that was let down by their special teams and lack of offense. I blame Zook for the ST. I blame Petrino for the O. I've never seen a team worse at special teams. They lost a game by a dropped punt, lost another on a botched hold on one FG and hitting the post on the other. Putting Hawthorne in to return punts last week, finally, and he had a 6-yard punt return - which was the best punt return IN 10 GAMES!! 6 YARDS!!

Zook lost most of the fanbase 3 years ago when they botched the post-Rose Bowl season. They need a change.

The O-line is not very good. They cannot run block and are only okay at pass blocking. Scheelhaase is a running QB whom Petrino is trying to turn into a throwing QB, but its not working just like what happened with Juice Williams. Scheelhaase only does a one-read-stare-down of Jenkins on every pass play which either results in a incomplete, interception, or broken play. Petrino does not run the option enough, and Scheelhaase hands the ball off too much when they do run the option. He needs to pull it out and run outside. He has the speed to get the edge on every play. Jason Ford is not good. D. Young is the best back on the team, but he fumbles a lot as well. The offense is extremely bland and predictable.

4 straight games with no first half points is embarrassing.

On the recent Illinois Rose Bowl year, if they didn't want to keep the Big 10 vs Pac 10 matchup, they should have sent Georgia to play USC in the Rose, and Illinois to Sugar to play Hawaii, because Georgia and USC were the hottest teams going in.

That's when college football had a crazy year, because the national title game going into Championship weekend was Missouri vs West Virginia, but both lost, and we got Ohio State vs LSU, yes Missouiri got the Cotton Bowl, because Oklahoma and Kansas got the BCS Bowls slot.
