ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico has hired former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie to head up its troubled football program.

Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs announced the appointment Wednesday. UNM has scheduled a press conference Thursday afternoon to introduce Davie, who will become the university's 31st head coach.

Davie compiled a 35-25 record at Notre Dame and led the Irish to three bowl games, including the 2001 Fiesta Bowl. Davie also spent 20 years as an assistant, including three years as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator and nine at Texas A&M.

Davie is currently the lead college football analyst for ESPN's prime-time Saturday night game.

Can't be worse than Locksley.

Yup. All he has to do to be better is don't punch out your coaching staff in the first year. Stop sexually harassing the staff, and then maybe win a couple games.

Good move. You win, you are a hero and move to someplace better. You lose, and you return to broadcasting with more money in your pocket.

Speaking of which... whatever happened to Willingham? I know he bombed out at Washington, but he was a decent coach/recruiter from what I remember, and wasn't that old...

Last coach to win there was Franchione. He was able to recruit Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma successfully then moved on after 4-5 years. If he can't recruit that area I doubt this goes well for him. From a local paper...

Somebody who calls himself “mlion111″ wrote to say that he and his 82-year-old mother had seen teasers on television news reports about UNM hiring a football coach, but didn’t catch the actual report. So when the mother asked, “Did they hire a coach?” he replied, “Yeah! Bob Davie, he used to be the head coach at Notre Dame, but he’s been out of football for ten years.”

“Deadpan, she says, ‘Well, so have we.’”

Tough job

I also think the winners of this may be us, don't have to hear him on tv again.

Reents, Bob Davie had been working this season on ESPN/ABC's College Football with Bob Wischusen prior to becoming the new head coach at New Mexico. As for Wischusen, I believe he's the radio voice of the New York Jets on ESPN Radio out there.

In 2008, he announced he was retired from coaching. Not sure anyone was asking him to coach anymore, but he basically stepped away from the game.

There was only room for one stoic, un-emotional black coach in football.
