Let the argument begin. There are several guys who you could've built a case for, starting with Red Sox CF and lead-off hitter Jacoby Ellsbury & 1B Adrian Gonzalez, not to mention Yankee CF and UIC's own Curtis Granderson. Those are three guys right there who had solid offensive stats this past season, and could've won the AL MVP instead of Tigers' righty Justin Verlander.

Guys, if Justin Verlander isn't the AL MVP, and I've heard from MLB "experts" who contend that a pitcher shouldn't qualify, who is?

The Blue Jays' RF did have a monster season, but Toronto wasn't even close to postseason play. I think when the Cubs' Andre Dawson won the NL MVP in 1987 for a last-place team, it was more an exception than anything else.

ARod won in last place. His season and Hawk's season were both above and beyond anyone else in baseball those years, and thats why they got it. Bautista's was a very good year, but not markedly better than people who played for contending teams.

I forgot about A-Rod, Big Chicagoan. He must have won the AL MVP one of the years the Rangers finished dead last in the AL West.

I think Ernie won one on a last place team too. If not, it was a bad second division team at best.

Finished middle of the pack both years he won it. 4th and 5th in the NL, respectively.

Pujols win the NL MVP? Or maybe Matt Kemp.

I believe Kemp almost won the triple crown, so I would expect him to win it.

'58 and '59, right? Fifth out of eight teams both seasons. Bad second division teams.

There are 5 teams in the playoffs from each league now. They placed fifth, so they would be in. Look, I'm really not arguing, I was just making a observation with respect to the state of todays MLB.

I guess that's one way to look at it. I'm not really arguing either. Just pointing out there have been more than a few MVPs from teams that were not good.
