Sheridan column: How the NBA deal got done, and what’s in it

By Chris Sheridan November 26, 2011 at 6:13 AM

NEW YORK —When it came time to be flexible, the commissioner who once called himself “Easy Dave” moved like he was Shakira.

David Stern and the NBA’s team owners made concessions on several key issues, both financial and system-related, to get the NBA lockout settled in the wee hours of the morning today at the close of a 15-hour bargaining session.

Here are some of the key details of those moves, according to a league source who was privy to the details of the tentative agreement and shared those details with SheridanHoops.com.

_ On the financial split, the players will receive between 49 and 51 percent of revenues, depending on annual growth. The players had complained prior to Saturday that the owners’ previous offer effectively limited them to 50.2 percent of revenues, but the source said 51 percent was now reasonably achievable with robust growth.

_Owners dropped their insistence on what would have been known as the Carmelo Anthony rule, preventing teams from executing extend-and-trade deals similar to the one that sent Anthony from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks last season. This means that if Dwight Howard, Deron Williams and Chris Paul want to leverage their way out of Orlando, New Jersey and New Orleans, they will still be eligible to sign four-year extensions with their current teams before being immediately traded elsewhere.

_ Teams above the salary cap will be able to offer four-year mid-level exception contracts to free agents each season. Previously, owners were asking that teams be limited to offering a four-year deal one year, a three-year deal the next, then four, then

_ The rookie salary scale and veteran minimum salaries will stay the same as they were last season. Owners had been seeking 12 percent cuts.

_ Qualifying offers to restricted free agents will become “significantly” improved. The sides had already agreed to reduce the time for a team to match an offer to a restricted free agent from 7 days to 3.

_ A new $2.5 million exception will be available to teams that go blow the salary cap, then use all of their cap room to sign free agents. Once they are back above the cap, they will be able to use the new exception instead of being limited to filling out their rosters with players on minimum contracts.

_ The prohibition on luxury tax-paying teams from executing sign-and-trade deals was loosened, although the freedom to execute those types of deals will still be limited.

Both sides will have the option to opt out of the 10-year deal after six years. Stern said he does not expect unanimous support from the owners, who will vote on the tentative agreement after the owners’ full negotiating committee receives a rundown of what is in the

Players also must ratify the agreement, a process that could take as long as a week while the union, which dissolved itself last week by issuing a disclaimer of interest, is reconstituted.

But if both constituencies sign off on the agreement, training camps and free agency will open simultaneously on Dec. 9, and the season will start with a tripleheader —Boston-New York, Chicago-L.A. Lakers and Miami-Dallas (a rematch of the NBA Finals) —on Dec. 25.

Both Stern and Hunter appeared visibly drained from the 15-hour bargaining session, which

The ownership side was most pleased with added restrictions and more punitive tax rates on teams that exceed the luxury tax threshold, feeling the new system will ensure a greater degree of competitive balance than existed under the previous agreement. Also, the financial concessions made by the players could total as much as $3 billion over the next 10 years.

“It will largely prevent the high spending teams from competing in the free agent market the way they have in the past," deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. "The luxury tax is harsher than it was in the last deal, and we hope it’s effective. You never can be sure with how a new system will work, but we feel ultimately it will give fans in each community hope that they can compete for championships, and that their basis for believing in their team will be a function of management of that team, rather than how deep the owner's pockets are or how large the market is."

The deal also includes an amnesty provision, which will allow teams to cut one player from their roster whose salary will not fully count against the salary cap or luxury tax. Chris Bernucca has already written a column on the most likely amnesty candidates, so go ahead

Also, if you want to know who the top 20 free agents are, Bernucca has you covered there,

There are going to be a lot of questions for all 30 teams, and that piece has been written too. Yep, Bernucca. Please follow him on Twitter. He only opened his account recently, and his follower count as of 6 a.m. EST is smaller than both the owners’ and players’ share of BRI.

As expected the owners won big. They decided to stop running up the score when Stern explained to them they could possible lose it all if the players win in court. Of course once the players got some leverage they decided to cave at the sight of the first shinny wrapper.

Can't wait for Dan to explain that Owners. Always. Win. Lockouts., then spend the next six months responding to any complaint from any player on any issue by screaming "YOU SHOULD HAVE BARGAINED FOR IT!!!"

The players had no leverage but a long shot court case that would of taken years.

Well once those child-support payments started to back up you knew the players would bend over.

If Stern found a way to get a 66 game season starting on Christmas Day then he did a great job in this whole thing.

Most people thought the season was lost. Instead, they lose a few games from the other conference and a chunk of season where everyone is watching the NFL anyways.

Hey Hova, is the fantasy draft still happening on Wednesday?

You picked a good time to schedule it. You in Stern's inner circle?

I changed it. Had to give everyone more time to see what players go where.

Did he really do that bad for the players? Isn't the split going to be somewhat close to 50/50? Wasn't that what just about everyone expected over the summer?

If anything, the owners like Jordan who wanted to destroy the players were silenced.

I can agree with that. I was shocked with how much the owners caved on a few things. I was a little peeved that the Sign & Trade rules were kept the same. I was really hoping that there would be a new "Carmelo Anthony" rule, so players can strong-arm their teams into trading them into their preferred destination. Dwight Howard will be doing the same thing to Orlando this season.

The owners got just about everything they wanted. They started off asking for 47 ($400M more a year) and "settled" for $360M to $320M. As we both know no one expects to finish negotiations at their asking price. They also got most of the system changes they wanted. If it weren't for owners like Jordan the league would have settled around 53-54%. That's what the old time owners were willing to do. The players got the chance to continue playing basketball.

Nowhere near as bad as '99. The talent is still awesome.

In '99, the next-generation players weren't great yet (except for Shaq), and the legendary players were no longer legendary (except for Robinson).

Besiktas retires Deron Williams' jersey

Besiktas retired Deron Williams' No. 8 jersey as part of a farewell ceremony prior to Tuesday's game.

Williams played about a month-and-a-half with the Turkish League after signing a contract with Besiktas in July. But with the 149-day NBA lockout over and training camp slated to begin on Dec. 9, Williams will be returning to New Jersey and rejoining the Nets for the start of the shortened 2011-12 season.

"Amazing Besiktas jersey retirement ceremony before tonight's game," Williams tweeted, along with a video of the ceremony, which was posted on YouTube.

"Just had a great time with the fans for the last time at Besiktas Milingaz! Arena taking the team out for dinner! I'm going to miss them ..."

Williams didn't play in Tuesday's game. But he recently scored 50 points for Besiktas -- the first time he scored that many points in a game at any level of basketball.

"The best part about the game was how the fans really got into it," Williams told ESPN NewYork.com. "You could tell that once I had 40 with like three minutes left they were counting. Every time I would score, you could see the excitement in the gym. You could tell they wanted me to get 50.

"My teammates were into it too. Every time I came to the bench, my teammate Mehmet 'Memo' Yagmur was like, 'six more,' then 'four more,' and 'two more.'"

Williams said his surgically repaired right shooting wrist is feeling much better. His health was certainly a concern heading into the offseason.

"I don't want to jinx myself -- knock on wood -- but my wrist is so much better from where it was the last year and a half," Williams said.

"It was just so frustrating to me because I was told that all I needed to do was rest it, and when I did that, it never got better. I'm happy I had the surgery when I did, so now I don't have to worry about it and that's allowed me to play my game."

According to eurobasket.com, Williams averaged 19.7 points and 6.4 assists per game while overseas.

The star point guard became the first major NBA star to ink a deal with a professional club overseas as a result of the lockout.

Once he returns to the United States, speculation about Williams' future will begin to swirl. He's under contract for this season, but can opt out of the final one-year and $17.8 million of his deal prior to the start of the 2012-13 campaign.
