Alabama is in no way the second best team in the country.

BCS is a gigantic farce.

I hope Alabama does beat LSU now. That "National Champion" would be great.

The biggest joke in the BCS this year is the Michigan/Va. Tech matchup. They skipped several higher ranked teams in the BCS standings to get that matchup.

...or the lamely set up Urban Meyer Bowl with OSU vs UF.

Illinois has to go to the shittiest bowl out there......the drive for hunger (formerly emerald) bowl in san fran.

Illinois is lucky they are going to any bowl at all.

Please tell me that somebody else is watching the Bowl Selection show on ESPN. If so, watch when they have the close-ups of Mark May - his hairline is clearly painted on his head/face. It looks awful, I can't believe they let him on the air looking like that.

Bama is not the third best team in their conference tho and you know it.

Bama would have won the Big 12 with ease.

Bama lost to LSU by 3 points. Bama and LSU would both crush Okla St.

Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State.

In my world there is no such thing as a college football champion. I'll watch the games purely for the entertainment value.

Is this really one of the arguments you are making for why Bama is the 2nd best team? Because OK. St. actually won the Big 12 with ease, so shouldn't that count for them also?

I also think that Bama is probably the "2nd best" team IMO, but that doesn't mean the same as "one of the two teams that deserves to be in the championship". They had their shot, they lost. They didn't win their conference, they didn't win their division.

I would rather have the 2 best teams in the championship game. Call me crazy I guess.

Bama and LSU are the 2 best teams.

I eagerly await Bama beating LSU for the championship and the reactions that will come with each team having lost one time, each having beat the other one time, but yet Bama having the title.

Fun stuff ahead.

LSU beat Georgia for the SEC Championship.

Where was Alabama?

You don't play for your conference championship, you shouldn't be able to play for the "National Championship".

If you actually look forward to this scenario being the end of a long CFB season, then I will call you crazy. That's a miserable way to end the season. Who would be the "best team" and the "2nd best team" in your opinion if that happens?

I have no clue, I do not like either team and would just as soon both teams lose.

You know for sure who the 2nd best team is, but you have no clue who would be #1?

The #1 team and who is actually the best team in the country is two different things.

The #1 team in that scenario would be Bama.

But no one would really know if they were the best team because of the dynamics of LSU and Bama each having one loss and each having beaten the other.

They always revert to the argument that these teams have strong fanbases and TV recognition. That very well may be true but don't all these BCS games sellout anyway? Did these bowls not sell out when Utah (twice), TCU, Boise St (twice), and Hawaii played?

Were their TV ratings that much worse than the BCS bowl involving an ACC or BE team?

The Illinois vs. UCLA game is like a cruel joke. Two teams playing for absolutely nothing and one of them had to get a waiver just to get in with a losing record.

the national championship is a farce anyway. at least you'll get two teams that can go toe to toe.

LSU deserved everything, alabama doesn't deserve to be there. but everybody wants alabama to win. you know, even if they do, it won't change anything in the system.

There is no other playoff system in American sports that makes this a priority outside of college basketball. It's always a "take the best team from pool A and the best team from pool B". That's the problem. This is like baseball deciding that the Yankees and Red Sox are the two best teams and making that the World Series even though they are from the same division. You had your chance. You couldn't prove it there. What gives them the right to win one game, after being outclassed by LSU all season, and then be the champion?

I heard a good argument against the Championship matchup on Mike & Mike this morning (I know   ):

The label of "BCS Championship" is just that - an artificial label. What this is is essentially a game between LSU/Bama at a neutral location. If this were just that (neutral site game) and Bama won the game by a FG, who would be ranked higher the next time the BCS rankings came out?

It would be LSU - they already won on the road at Bama and won one more game than Bama, and that was a quality win at a neutral site vs. UGA. But the problem is, if Bama wins in that scenario, LSU gets screwed despite the better body of work.

It makes little sense for Bama to be in this game.

But recency does play a part, doesn't it? If Oklahoma State had lost in overtime to Iowa State in Week 1 rather than later in the season the way they did, the rankings would be different although their body of work would be exactly the same. Isn't that right?

It shouldn't, but it does usually.

But in that case I also think it should count for them that they barely lost the same day that 2 of their AD's coaches died in a plane crash.

That gets .000162 points in the BCS

Do you think if it's possible, that Oklahoma State should have postponed that game vs Iowa State.

They pretty much postponed every sporting event that weekend besides the football game.

I don't know about that, but schools like Oklahoma State, Stanford & Clemson have a right to cry foul. It's my understanding that Oklahoma State & Alabama were thisclose to #2 in the final BCS rankings, and that Virginia Tech & Michigan "travel well" which explains how those 2 lower ranked schools got picked for the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Huh? There are 33 bowl games, a money grab for most & the fact there are conference affiliations which explains how West Virginia(?) got picked for a BCS bowl from a lousy Big East makes me wonder how legit the integrity of these games really are.

I'm having a really hard time coming to grips with exactly why this could have affected the OK St. players. D1 football programs at a school like OkSt. always seem to exist in its own little hermetically sealed bubble. What happens in normal campus life seems to have very little relevance to players and staff alike. Big time programs famously take great pains to insulate themselves from it. Why ever in the world the loss of two assistant coaches from the women's basketball team would (really) register doesn't seem to follow. For me.

I would really doubt whether more than 2-3 players(if that) would even know who the coaches were. I'd guess that ol' coach "I'm a man, I'm 40" didn't either.

IMO, they just blew it and are scrambling for any excuse for their shitty performance.

I'd disagree, but it's just opinions. When I was in college, most of the athletes on the various teams knew each other, went to each other's games periodically, etc. They crossed paths in the athletic offices, functions, etc.

I'm guessing even the non-athlete students at OSU were probably a little shaken up that day. It was national news, and it was the 2nd deadly plane crash in their AD in recent years. It affected the entire campus.

BTW - point of clarity, it was the head coach and an assistant that died, right? Not two assistants.
