Simmons actually debunked this theory in his book. Bowie was already injury prone at the time and Jordan was the most exciting college bball player coming out. Could have flipped Drexler and other parts for a serviceable big man. Even at the time people thought it was a questionable decision to take Bowie.

Because you always take the best available player? ESPECIALLY when he is better than anyone you have on your team at the time.
