I'll take Jewels over Dominicks any day.

Just don't take my ALDI's from me. I bet I'll never see you in there, Biggie.

Yes. Only Jewels sells this particular brand. Trust me I've gone to other stores.

Aldi on Clybourn, right next to Dominicks. Been there.

Not sure it serves it's purpose there as Dominicks has enough specials you can pay almost the same price.

Ironic that ALDI is owned by one of the worlds wealthiest people. I think he is worth about $24 Bill! Selling ritz crackers!

I have yet to comprehend the delight that many would have me believe is Aldi's. It's a little shitbox store with mostly generic items packaged to look like the real shit at a lower price BUT AT A SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED PRODUCT AMOUNT, and you have to bag your own shit ... that's what teenagers are for since people like Sandusky and that teacher in Florida years ago ruined it for everybody.

Aldi is just like Home Depot, Starbucks, Target, Trader Joes (Same owners as Aldi) etc.

They work on the exact same business plan.

one centrallly placed massive warehouse, feeds these guys all their stuff daily. Widgets!

I'm sure I may have mentioned this here before. My stepfather was a professional shoplifter. When someone asked him what he did for a living he liked to say, "I am a Jewel thief". Actually, I don't think he ever did much business at Jewel since they had the best security. He did like to roll through Aldi. And I think there used to be a small chain called Eagle, didn't there? He said those places had good quality meat.

How does one distinguish between a professional and amateur shoplifter? Was someone paying your stepfather to shoplift items?

It's just like a professional or amateur girlfriend. She's getting paid either way, it's just a question of how you go about the formalities.

Lots of people shoplift. Very few can make a career of it.

My stepfather had a route of suburban housewives for whom he stole various cuts of meat. They would even place orders. "I need a rib roast for Christmas." My stepfather would get it and deliver it at one-half the marked price. That's how he made his living. That's what I would call a "professional" as opposed to a goof who just grabs something he wants on impulse and has no idea that a security guy is watching from behind a mirror.

Yep...I want to say there was an Eagle in Palatine in the same strip mall as the Browns Chicken of Death.

What I understand is that Chicagoans (read: african american community) has been calling it Jewels for years, and it is annoying.

100% incorrect. This is something that older Chicagoans of all races do. My grandmother still calls it "the Jewels". Learn to laugh a little...you're too uptight.

Yeah, that's what I thought. My girlfriend is off work today and she's from Palatine. I just asked her if there was an Eagle there before you posted. She said, "Yeah and a Rainbow Records".

So my stepfather may have been loading his pants with steaks at the very hour shakes was killing those people.

Rainbow Records used to be across the street by the Chiggy's. I want to say they moved to Barrington...I was just in there in April.

My girlfriend says Rainbow was in the strip mall down the way from Edelweiss. I'm not arguing with either of you. I don't know Palatine that well.

That's possible...there were 2 or 3 different record stores in that little area...I'm thinking back about 14 or 15 years now.

You've heard of the silent "s," right? Like in Des Moines. There is also the invisible "s." So with Jewels the s is invisible but not silent.

It is a "I don't know what this store is called" thing.

Or you're Mike North. And we all know how intelligent he sounds.

Right it IS a Mike North type thing. He's not black or white gangsta.

 Well, he wasn't old enough to pull that off when I knew him.

Seriously, it's probably hard to pull off the "I forgot to pay" story when your pants and shirt are loaded with prime beef. He did get arrested once at the A&P on Church and East Prairie. It went in the Skokie Review Blotter. My mother was mortified. Too bad for her though. She was just like Maggie Daley.
