If MLB Network Hot Stove was a cartoon, I would insist on having thousands of upgraded, precise products from ACME. All of them would be directed at Kevin Millar, and his character would be killed off in the final minutes of episode one. He would be finally put down by the ACME Anus Anvil w/ Hair Dye detector.

Marlins reportedly offered Pujols 10/$275M + incentives to bring it to a possible $300M and offered CJ Wilson $100M, but neither of them wanted to play in Miami.

The Diamondbacks have acquired RHP Trevor Cahill and LHP Craig Breslow from the Athletics for minor leaguers RHP Jarrod Parker, OF Collin Cowgill and RHP Ryan Cook.

Another curious move by the great Billy Beane. Parker (23) is probably going to be a pretty good pitcher but if Beane's going to trade one of his better pitchers you would think he would want to upgrade the awful offense but instead he gets another young pitcher. Cowgill (25) is ok but isn't the offensive upgrade this team desparetly needs. Cahill (23) will be a real nice addition to the D'Bags rotation as will Breslow to the bullpen. Love this trade for the D'Bags.

Unless Beane saw something with Cahill's down 2011 season (thanks for fucking my fantasy team you asshole  ) this does indeed to be a great move for the Dbacks.

Joe Saunders non-tendered. I'm very interested in him for the Cubs. Depending on the price.

Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal
Saunders last two seasons: 21-30, 4.07 ERA, 415.1 IP. Buerhle last two seasons: 26-22, 3.94 ERA, 415.2 IP. #Diamondbacks #MLB

Marlins Sign Aaron Rowand
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 12 at 4:57pm CST]
The Marlins signed Aaron Rowand to a minor league deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The Giants, who cut Rowand in August, are paying him $12MM less the MLB minimum salary in 2012, the final season of the five-year, $60MM deal he signed with San Francisco in 2007.

Rowand hit .233/.274/.347 in 351 plate appearances for the Giants this past season, playing all three outfield positions. The 34-year-old was last a useful player in 2009, according to FanGraphs' version of wins above replacement. The White Sox, Rowand's first MLB team, showed some interest in him this offseason

120.2 of those innings were in the AL and he had a 4.62 ERA. In 294.2 innings in the NL he had a 3.85 ERA. Saunders better stay in the NL.

Does anyone know how the posting fee is paid if a team signs Darvish? Does it go in installments with the contract? One lump sum?

The Reds have acquired Mat Latos from the Padres, tweets Ken Rosenthal, and Yonder Alonso is among the players headed to the Padres in exchange.

Wow. The Padres already have Anthony Rizzo (22) as their long-term first baseman so why would they trade for Alonzo?? Could it be a 3 team deal?? Maybe Theo and Jed get their boy Rizzo back?? I can't wait to see how this shakes out.

Reds have announced on their official Twitter feed that they've acquired Latos for Alonso, Edinson Volquez, Yasmani Grandal, and Brad Boxberger.

Holy fuck this can't possibly true?!?! There has to be more to this trade. That's a FUCKING TON to give up for Latos. If this is true the Padres hit the mother load of all mother loads.

I talked with Josh Byrnes he told me Alonso will play 1B & the plan is for Rizzo to continue his development at AAA. Trade also a possiblity

Cubs need to be on the phone with SD immediately.

Yes and yes. Walt is a well respected GM. He should be. He just got hosed. Latos will be injured in the first month of the season. His delivery is turrible.

The Texas Rangers have won the posting auction of Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish with a record $51.7M bid, sources tell Yahoo! Sports.

Thank God the Cubs didn't win the bid. $100 million for a player that has ZERO major league experience is just outright dumb.

don't forget that latos is evidently some sort of special jagoff who isn't very hard to dislike.... i think during his short stint in san diego he already pissed off the giants, if not a decent % of san francisco, and had other incidents that caused some teammates to go ?!?!?! wtf?!?! then when he got injured in spring training it took him damn near 1/2 of the season to get back to being even ~66-75% of what he was last year.

bad mechanics or otherwise, the dude had something like 18 or 20 consecutive starts during 2010 where he gave up 2ER or less. that's pretty damn good... he only won like ~6-8 of those games cuz the padres fucking blow, and he ended up hitting the wall pretty hard in mid-sept, hence the ~2.75-2.90ish ERA, cuz he was basically in the high 1s / low 2s all season long prior to that point.

so what i'm saying is that there's usually a reason that a team like the padres would get rid of someone with as much talent, even in the short-mid term, as latos... and it's not because they're stone-cold believers in the hitting prowess of one yonder alonso (who i actually like as a solid prospect. i think the kid can hit)

btw, if the cubs wanna get on the phone and wrestle a prospect away from a team who prolly won't have a regular spot for him, go get ryan lavarnway from the red sox. i'm sure theo is plenty familiar... and i think the kid has something like ~4-5 consecutive 30+ HR seasons in the minors while he's a bad enough catcher to basically rot as the DH-in-waiting behind david ortiz.

whoa, i was way off on lavarnway with the hyperbole... he only has two seasons of 30+ HR in the minors, with ~20-22 in the two seasons prior to that.

here's his minor league stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minor ... varn001rya

still tho, if you want one of those big-lugs without a position who seems to be able to hit the ball to the point where he's a AAAA player at age ~24-25, which seems to be something that is relevant to the cubs' interests, then go get lavarnway.

Especially when you realize the Rangers have to send that in three days. If it was broken up over the length of the potential deal, that's one thing. Oh goodness, we get the right to negotiate with a potential number two starter? Where do I wire the money?!?! There's no way the Cubs were ever serious about this option.

I guess the Rangers felt they had some money to spend after 2 straight trips to the WS and losing Wilson this off season. Like I said I really like Darvish but that is crazy money. Signing Darvish and making Feliz a starter could give them the best rotation in the AL. They better hope he doesn't flame out like Rice-K did.

Look for Toronto to make a serious run at Prince.

Oakland Athletics left-hander Gio Gonzalez, highly coveted by a number of teams, was dealt to the Washington Nationals Thursday for four prospects, a team source told ESPN Insider Keith Law.

The Athletics will receive right-hander Brad Peacock, catcher Derek Norris, left-hander Tommy Milone and pitcher A.J. Cole. The deal is pending physicals.

Gonzalez, who is 26 and in the first year of arbitration eligibility, is expected to command a salary of about $4 million for 2012.

Gonzalez went 16-12 last season with a 3.12 ERA, with 197 strikeouts and 91 walks.

In 2010, he was 15-9 with a 3.23 ERA, with 171 strikeouts and 92 walks.

Peacock, the key piece among the prospects, went a combined 15-3 with a 2.39 ERA for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season. He was added to the Nationals' big league roster late in the season, and allowed one run in 12 innings.

I don't know if Peacock is the key to the deal. Cole may end up being better. Norris is a decent catcher who had a low batting average but hit a bunch of home runs. Millone is a soft tossing lefty whose numbers are better than his stuff. This looks like a good deal for both sides.

I suspect it will be a better deal for Oakland, but Gonzalez went from one pitcher's paradise to another so I'm sure he'll be fine.
