Went one time.

Had no idea what 80% of the menu was, ordered the $89 Lobster Lasgana.

Was a square of about 2 inches, and 5 inches high, with multicolored pastas.

Had a spoon in my setting with a notch cut out of it.

Asked the waiter what it was for?

In about as snooty as a voice one could use "It is a ladeling spoon sir....it used to ladel."

-Additionally, My sis used to live right next door and we would often see "Chuck" outside on his stairs smoking a cig, I would always say hello to the guy....he never said one thing back.

-Someone (Maybe Fritzy...there is a name for you) told this story on the air of how they bought time to work in his kitchen from a Charity auction. They said it was terrible. The guy yelled at the him the whole time, then at the end of the 2 hours, they literally said thanks, took the apron back, showed them out the back door into the alley. See yaaa

With the new Nuevo chefs making better food that are not as stuck up, time for Charlie to rethink it.

He might just concentrate on packaging

Well there going to be a huge hole in the $150 per plate 3 month wait for reservations restaurant scene thats for sure.

Chuck got some competition in the $150+ plate club with Moto, Tru, Alinea and he lost.

Plus everyone of those places gives more of a show. If you are going to drop $500 on dinner for 2, the whole thing better be memorable!

I showed the guys at Alinea a building and I am not going to say I know them well, but they seemed pretty down to earth and from what I have seen, they don't try to create this amazing aloof snotty atmosphere.

The weird part of dining at Trotters was the number of people dining alone with a bottle of wine. I would say 5 or 6 people sitting at tables by themselves.

Well maybe beating cancer ( Achatz) gives you a better perspective on life. Its just food, if theres anyone more arrogant than athletes its these high end chefs who actually think they're actually doing something great in their kitchens that just can't be beat anywhere.

If I am going to be dropping $500 for two people, I better get a bottle of Dom, a reach around, and a pissload of food not some tomato on a plate with a 5 page intro to it.

Never got the appeal of this fartknocker and his snooty fans.

I'd rather go to a place like hopleaf where the food and beer are really good and will fill you up for about a quarter (or less) of what he charges.

Food was very good.

Ambience was like eating in a hotel lobby.

Can I assume you r not a Bernstein fan either? As I highly doubt it was his favorite place, most people do not eat at Trotters on a semi regular basis.

I never understood how Trotters was still open. Id rather go to Gibson's or Shaw's Crab House & get better food, in a better atmosphere, for half the price of Chucks.

There are people who enjoy the quiet almost private dining and attention that they provided with the 5 course meals, with a wine sommelier coming to the table discussing various bottles of $200+ wine.

While I am with you about going to Gibsons or Hugos, I could see how some might not be.

Note for Someguy: A sommelier is someone who is a wine expert and is often in finer dining establishments to help you choose a wine.

It's mostly a special occasion place. The people I know that go there on a semi-regular to regular basis are extreme foodies or chefs. Bf I think is partially right but it's more than just private dining. It's also an experience. You don't see what is on their menu almost anywhere else. It's not a place where I would want to go but there is a place for it.

I think his philosopy is interesting and it seems like it came mostly from his own interest and work. Bf what did his dad do? Did he bankroll all his European traveling?

It's weird, I love the idea of molecular gastronomy I have no interest in Alinea, Everest, Tru, or Moto. I think I'd rather go to Les Nomades that has French influence or Graham Elliot that's more American, but that's about it. Everything else seems too out there but maybe I'm missing out.

Trotters quiet atmosphere just isn't for me. I remember taking a bunch of people to Nicks Fishmarket near O'Hare about 10 years ago. There were 10 of us, & you could hear a pin drop in this place it was so quiet. Then 5 waiters show up at our table standing between every other person with white towels draped over their arms. I finally politely asked these guys to leave us alone for a while. When I go out to dinner, I want to go to a place that is fun, & loud is ok. I expect exceptional service, but I don't want someone standing over me.

Do you understand what molecular gastronomy is? If so, I don't think that you love it if you have those restaurants on your shit list. If not, then I don't think you should publicly state that you love it until you know what it is.

Well, she did say she loves the idea of molecular gastronomy, perhaps not the execution of such.

I'd like to publically state I love the idea of spherical martinis but when it comes down to it I'm looking for about 2.5 oz of a liquid in a cold glass with an actual lemon peel or whole olive. The platings are usually very pretty and it's a really interesting concept but I don't think I'd be into it as a dining experience.

When I had the time, I didn't have the money. When I had the money, I didn't have the time.

dolphin doesn't make appointments to eat months in advance. I may miss out on some experiences but I am comfortable with that decision.

Charlie Trotter is an irretrievable douchebag.

Moto is a restaurant that only an irretrievable douchebag could like.

Dr Ken, you would never slum here in the SW burbs but this is THE place to go for BBQ;
http://www.chuckscafe.com/

Let us just do all of your research for you. What did you end up getting her for xmas anyway?

I would have to disagree here

While Chuck's IS pretty much my favorite restaurant, I think his strength lies more in the cajun/creole & mexican parts of the menu, not to mention the soups.

I find the BBQ to be decent, but nothing mind blowing

Thanks Frank. But, looking for a place downtown.

Thinking about Roka Akor.

I got her a weekend downtown away from the kids (except for me, of course), including a show recommended by BRick, along with a few other things she wanted.
