The Ravens might be hard-pressed to keep their heir apparent to general manager Ozzie Newsome.

Four teams -- the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders -- are expected to seek permission to speak to Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta for their general manager openings. In many ways, DeCosta has become the Jeff Fisher of front-office searches.

The Colts have already received permission to talk to DeCosta, according to WBAL's Gerry Sandusky, the team's radio play-by-play announcer.

DeCosta has long been considered the successor-in-waiting to Newsome, the team's only general manager, who turns 56 in March but has never publicly hinted at retirement. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has rewarded DeCosta for his loyalty -- he removed his name from the Seahawks' general manager search in 2009 -- with an increase in pay and responsibility.

"I think Eric knows how highly regarded he is in Baltimore, but when you have a guy as successful as Ozzie Newsome in the job, there's not a ton of promises that you can make," Bisciotti said in March 2010. "I think Eric is smart enough to see what happened with Phil [Savage] and George [Kokinis], and he'll probably limit himself to consideration of just a handful of jobs. His relationship with Ozzie is just as solid as any relationship I've seen in the NFL. He's so happy in his job that I think it will take a perfect job to get his serious consideration. Eric is going to make a great GM someday."

The problem for the Ravens is that the perfect job could be coming DeCosta's way. With four teams in the mix, the competition for DeCosta might result in a deal that he can't refuse.

DeCosta officially became Newsome's right-hand man in the war room in 2005, when Savage left for the Cleveland Browns' general manager job. One team official said DeCosta sets up the draft and Newsome makes the final decisions.

What makes DeCosta attractive to so many teams is his age (40), track record and a thoroughness that highlights his desire for better results.

"We even grade our lunches," DeCosta once said. "If I say it's a 6.2 lunch - all the guys know what that means: pretty good, but not great. A 7.5 is like the Pro Bowl; if I say the soup is a 7.5 today, everybody runs to get the soup."

I'm hearing he's kind of football's answer to Theo Epstein. If so, I'm interested.

I was wondering if 'back luck' was intended...

Just heard John Clayton on with Waddle & Silvy say that he thinks DeCosta will be the Bears new GM. He also said he thinks Tice will be the offensive coordinator.

My favorite part is that he says "I am Gerry with a G." which throws all Jerry Sandusky's with a J under the bus.

It makes sense to move Tice to that position. One has to wonder if he'll end up as head coach in a few years. He seems different (almost rebellious) compared to the rest of Lovie's guys, and if things go south, you can bet Tice will angle for that job.

Maybe the Bears should be interviewing Keeping Score

On a side note, I am good with anything that further escalates the war between the Ravens and Bears. It's great to hear how butthurt that group of entitled douches gets when something does go according to their plan.

What do the Ravens drafts look like since 2005. I have a feeling they are not as good as perceived.

Looks good to me. Even Clayton isn't a full on bust and that was not a particulary high pick. Still, I'd need to see the total drafts.

I would think the Raiders and Bears would be the two best of the four followed by the Colts with that high pick. The Raiders are a bit unstable with Davis gone.

DeCosta is the kind of guy that fills my requirements...younger, apprenticeship under a respected organization, undersecretary looking to move his way up, experienced in scouting/drafting. Let Cliff Stein handle contracts and Ted Phillips handle budgeting/non football decisions

Al Davis wasn't really known as a great stabilizer the past few years. He has lost several draft picks by acquiring Carson Palmer (not bad, but way overpaid), Jason Campbell (bad), and Terrelle Pryor ( )

Ray Rice in the second round of 08

So he has already matched what many consider Angelo's best pick.

I'm a big fan of Eric Decosta. He has been mentored by perhaps the best GM in the NFL, Ozzie Newsome who knows a little bit about evaluating talent & drafting, having drafted 4 or 5 HOF's in the last 10 years or so. Decosta is an aggressive take charge guy, much like Theo. He's also from Boston. The Bears, Colts, Rams & Raiders have all asked the Ravens for permission to interview him. Scratch the Raiders, they just hired McKenzie from Green Bay. Sure the Ravens have a hard on for the Bears due to the draft incident with Angelo, but the Ravens cant deny one teams interview request & then approve another. Its all or nothing, They either allow him to interview with all teams or none.
There are reports that Decosta isn't interested in the Rams job, but he has interest in the Bears. Not sure about the Colts, but you gotta think the prospect of taking over a team with Manning & Luck at QB might be attractive. When Seattle wanted to interview DeCosta in 2009, the Ravens promoted him & gave him more money & responsibility. Will they do it again? Hopefully not. I like the cut of this guys gib.

I'd take the opposite view. There is a hard, unpopular decision staring anyone in the face who takes that job. If you take the Bears job, you'll have the benefit of the doubt you are better than Angelo for at least 2 years.

Damnit! I really wanted Decosta here. I know that the Ravens have promised him Ozzies GM job. Once again the Bears will settle for 2nd or 3rd choice. I just hope the Bears don't promote Tim Ruskell, but I bet that is exactly what will happen.
It looks like Jeremy Bates is the early leader in the clubhouse to get the passing coach job.
