This is unbelievable. I predicted this would happen, but I really cant believe how stupid the McCaskeys & Phillips are.
The shitfest continues...

Bears may stay in house, hire Tim Ruskell as G.M.
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 9, 2012, 7:09 AM EST

When the Bears announced that they had fired General Manager Jerry Angelo, they said director of player personnel Tim Ruskell would oversee the front office until a replacement for Angelo could be found.

Now there’s talk in Chicago that the replacement for Angelo will be Ruskell.

John Mullin of CSNChicago.com writes that the sentiment in Chicago is that Ruskell has done a good job in his two years with the Bears and may deserve to keep the job on a permanent basis.

The hiring of Ruskell, who spent five years as G.M. of the Seahawks, wouldn’t satisfy Bears fans who think a major shakeup of the front office in order. But he may be the man for the job.

My only guess in trying to figure out Bears logic, is that if they blow this year coming up, you then fire everyone and hire a GM who has 100% control over everything.

Great story, scorehead

Its not official yet, GD. But to be honest, I would be surprised if the Bears hired anybody else other than Ruskell.

Anyone who would actually be shocked by this needs to take a serious look at how they view the Bears.

This is the Bears way. They hire the least logical option (giving Ditka more control). Or the screw up what would be a good move (Dave McGinnis, firing Angelo).

Logically, making Ruskell the GM is better than hiring an outside guy with Lovie Smith still being the coach. The outside guy would be looking for a losing team so he could bring in his guys (see the last 3 years of the Dick Jauron era). Ruskell as GM may be the only shot they have to win now.

I'm hoping what Dan said is correct...let them blow this year and then blow it up.

Yeap agree. It makes no sense to add a new GM, give him a coach he didn't hire, and then if things go wrong, the new GM can lay off blame. But Bears logic is, well, illogical.

We have been saying this for 5 years. For some reason, the Bears are scared to death to bring in experts. That is a hell of a way to run a business. I PREDICT...Ruskell will be named Bears GM this week...& the Ruskell/Lovie era begins.

FUCK!!!

The flaw there is thinking one year of being a GM wont matter.

Correct.

But the 'Bears Way' of doing this would be to fire everybody, but keep Ruskell as GM

What will happen next year is the Bears will go 9-7, & Phillips will say that the changes he made are paying off & that the Bears are improving...& Lovie will be even more despised in Chicago than he is now. We have seen this movie before.

Exactly...and Ruskell will be signed for 5 more years, 4 of which will be filled with suck.

scorehead, just because you hate Lovie does not mean he is "despised in Chicago"

He is not hated near as much as Angelo, Philips, and the McCaskey's. I am not a Lovie guy, but give credit. If anything he has overachieved with some of the slop rosters he has been given. Its not Lovie's call to totally clean house. So blame the guy(s) that don't make that call, not the head coach you meathead.

If they hire Tim Ruskell the McCaskeys are essentially proving they are fools.

I thought he was NOT a candidate for the Bears' GM vacancy. Mac & Spiegs' Seattle correspondent, KJR SportsRadio's Dave "Softy" Mahler specifically warned Bears' management NOT to promote Tim Ruskell to General Manager when they talked before the Seattle debacle in December. It would be so Bears if they hired this guy to generally manage the Bears. The book on Ruskell in Seattle is just as bad as the guy the Bears just fired in Jerry Angelo. Ruskell's supposed to be just as bad at drafting as Angelo was.

Despise was too strong of a word. Unpopular would have been a better word choice.

I'm not even sure unpopular would be accurate. Again you are letting your personal feeling cloud your judgement, which is normally atrocious enough itself.

Do you really want to try to make the argument that Lovie is a popular Bears head coach?

Calling Lovie unpopular in Chicago is like calling the sky blue.

I am not saying Lovie is universally loved. I am saying that smart Bears fans (not you, clearly) know that the biggest problems with the Bears is with the front office and McCaskey's.

Right. 2 different issues. I agree. So Lovie is unpopular & the McCaskeys are the biggest problem with the Bears. We agree...I think.

The Chicago Bears have released a preliminary list of candidates to replace former general manager Jerry Angelo. All four have been granted permission to interview with the team, but a statement on the Bears' website made clear that additional candidates have not been ruled out and that current director of player personnel Tim Ruskell remains in play.

The four outsiders are:
Phil Emery, the Kansas City Chiefs' director of college scouting
Jason Licht, the New England Patriots' director of pro personnel
Jimmy Raye, the San Diego Chargers director of player personnel
Marc Ross, the New York Giants' director of college scouting

I don't want to pass much judgment on this list because I don't totally know what the Bears are up to. It's unusual for a team to announce its full slate of candidates for such an important job. Is this a new era of transparency? Or could there be a stealth candidate they're distracting us from? Call me a conspiracy theorist, but lots of crazy stuff happens this time of year. Could it be an attempt to demonstrate due diligence before ultimately hiring Ruskell?

There have been rumblings that Ruskell has a better-than-even chance to get the job. Let's just say that the Bears haven't stacked the deck with this pool. None of the four has experience as a general manager.

The most intriguing candidate might be Ross, who has been a rising star since the Philadelphia Eagles made him the league's youngest college scouting director in 2000, when he was 27. He is a Princeton graduate and has a master's degree from the University of Massachusetts.

Stay tuned.
