and there used to be a thread here somewhere with recommendations. I have two main goals: 1. to sleep 2. Mexican food. We don't have any here except Taco Bell and so I haven't had any Mexican food for a long while. Also, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

What area of SD will you be in? I may have some ideas depending on where you are at.

Aero Club bar.

Ocean Beach is a good place to sleep.

You're probably gonna have to drive away from downtown/the beaches to find decent Mexican food.

El Indio was pretty damn good and close to downtown. It was on Diners Drive ins and Dives I think as the place where they make their own burrito shells with some crazy machine. I went there alot back in the day and it was solid.

Most of the taco shops have a california burrito which is legit. I think Roberto's or El Cotixan or even Los Panchos were all pretty good.

Ok, had to look it up but now I remember always seeing that place. Its right down the street in fact. That is probably 1 of a handful of bars I have not been to in SD. Is it a cool place?

Oh yeah, like the Aero better than some of the places along the strip in OB.

Kind of a local/townie place, but still friendly to the occasional tourist who wanders in looking for a decent pour of whiskey.

I never really found a place in OB I actually liked all that much for drinking. They did put in a new pizza place a few years ago that was legit and of course the new pizza port there is supposed to be awesome though I have never gone. I would personally try to go to the Liars club in Mission Beach as much as possible as it was the best dive/beer bar in the world but it closed due to some legal/tax issues or something.

Lajolla and Del Mar are beautiful areas to hang out for the day, if your wife will be with you. Probably my most favorite place in this country. I have always said that if I could live anywhere it would be right here.

That takes damn near an hour to drive to. It is so far north. I drank plenty of stone when I lived there but never at the brewery aside from the 1st time I went there and realized how damn far away it was.

Really?? That sucks. Just means you'll need to have a designated driver!

Just a great place. It's a chain like Capital Grille, but still excellent

Damn good eats + great locations. I've been to the one on Longboat Key near Sarasota quite a bit, never been to any of the others.

For that price range in San Diego I'd go with Anthony's Fish Grotto.

Went to Los Panchos last night. We are going to Lucha Libre taco shop tonight. We have the champions table reserved. I have no idea what this mean but I hope I either have to fight someone or wear a wrestling mask.

You have to give Vickie Guererro a hurricanrana.

Ok, I didn't have much time to post and I only had the pick of where to eat that first night and we wanted to go somewhere close and Los Panchos was closest. Thursday night we went to Lucha Libre Taco Shop which was across the street from La India. I tried to convince the other three to go to La India but we had the Champions table reserved and they thought it was a big deal (apparently you need to book it 24 hours in advanced). I found it to be rather lame. Essentially you got a candelabra with each candle holder filled with a different salsa and a waitress at a place that had counter service. It was roped off and painted gold. That's all there was to it...oh and the guy who brought us our food was wearing a wrestling mask. Friday lunch was at La Fiesta (on 5th) which was recommended by a friend who was there last week for a conference, I had the carne asada california burrito and it was the best thing I had the whole week. Friday dinner was the graduate school reunion dinner and I do not remember where it was and it was nothing special. Saturday I skipped out on the conference after the morning session and went down to the USS Midway and that was pretty cool. I let my student pick the dinner that night and she wanted pizza so we went to local pizza place and it wasn't bad, but I like bbq chicken pizza.

This conference is always in January and always somewhere warm. This was the 8th time I have gone and I found San Diego to be nice & fun but not in the top three: 1. New Orleans (during Mardi Gras, pre-Katrina), 2. Las Vegas, 3. San Antonio (I was surprised by how much fun SA was, I wouldn't mind living there) but it was definitely not in the bottom three: 1. Memphis 2. Palm Springs 3. Albuquerque. It was definitely in the middle (San Diego and Tampa). Next year it is back to New Orleans. I probably would have found it to be more fun if I was with someone who had lived there. That helped in New Orleans and San Antonio.
