If it's a physical addiction they can't manage it. The substance triggers the reaction and even worse there is sometimes a nasty withdrawal which makes it even more difficult to avoid it. Alcohol actually has really bad side effects from withdrawal which can be bad enough to kill you.

If it's a mental addiction they can learn to manage it but normally there is at least some sort of physical addiction if you have a mental addiction.

Maybe. It really wouldn't be a feasible plan for the harder drugs. Are there any in existance to manage or control the amount of alcohol eventually? There might be a point after you quit that you can then do it responsibly. There is something jarring to me about never ever having a drink again. Like it would drive me to absolutely fall off the wagon get plowed blind drunk on occasion.

I have a family member that was pretty bad at one point. He stopped for a decade at least and then got married to someone that liked to have a beer or two a couple of nights a week. He resisted for a while and then he would decided to have one once in a while again. He did OK for about 2 years and now I see him start to go back to the old ways again.

It sucks because his own wife fucking stuck the gun back in his hand. I remember going to their house and seeing beer in the fridge and being totally flabbergasted that she could be so fucking stupid about it.

It depends how bad you get. Hamilton would supposedly black out for long periods of time with his last memory being one or two drinks in. For him it really is life or death. He's past the point of being able to control his addiction without complete avoidance. It's sad, but it does consume your life. He's lucky he was able to come back from the brink. Lots of others aren't so lucky.

Better? Yes.
Possible? No.

That sucks. It's tough to watch something like that. I had a relative struggle with it and eventually lose. It is something I often think about especially when drinking is involved.

I have not had a drink of alcohol in over thirteen (13) years. In the year prior to stopping, I drank approximately one million (1,000,000) beers.

I wish there had been somebody around like Spaulding to teach me to effectively manage my vast intake. Wink.

It runs in my family so sometimes I get worried but then I just shrug it off and use the ol mottos "It wont happen to me" and "I can quit whenever I want to, I just dont want to right now"

This is one reason why addiction therapy tend to take the "one day at a time" philosophy. It is daunting to think about the words always and never in regards to anything.

This is incorrect, but certainly not due to a lack of trying. Did you know that flight attendants will actually cut you off at a certain point?

I hope not, given his current grave medical status of "deceased."

There is nothing better than sitting back and cracking open 2,74O Ice cold miller lites per day.

It was not literally one million (1,000,000) beers. Drinking one hundred fourteen (114) beers per hour, every single hour, is a difficult pace to keep for longer than a week or so.

Phil vs Doc.

It's like in Identity when they make the guy face all of his multiple personalities.

I prefer to think of it as Face Off and I have had Mr. Burns face surgically grafted onto Tim Tebow.

I do know a guy that once every 6 months he has a big night of drinking and doesnt drink at all other than that.

He claims he is an alchy? Personally dont like the guy, but I kinda understand the mentallity. Friday night drink hard, feel like crap all day Saturday, do nothing but order pizzas and diet cokes, take a nap or 2, Sunday go workout....see Jack Daniels in 6 months.
