.J. Fleck, introduced Thursday as Northern Illinois’ new offensive coordinator, has resigned, NIU head coach Dave Doeren announced in a statement Friday.

“P.J. called today and said he does not feel he’s ready to be an offensive coordinator,” Doeren said. “It’s unfortunate, but what’s best for our program is to move in a different direction and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Fleck, a Kaneland High School product who played for the Huskies from 1999 to 2003 and coached at the school from 2007-09, spent the past two seasons at Rutgers as an assistant coach. Doeren had hired him to be NIU’s offensive coordinator after Matt Canada left to take the same position at Wisconsin.

Doeren said he has already spoken to several candidates and is confident he will have a replacement in place soon.

“Everything happens for a reason and the result of this will make NIU Football even better,” Doeren said

interesting indeed. Something happened. Quitting is not his style....especially this abruptly.

He's headed to Tampa to join Schiano.

He's gonna hate once he realizes it a 16-18 hr/day, 365 day/yr job in the NFL. He'll be back in college soon.

Is this actually happening or are you just throwing it out there? I can't imagine him screwing NIU like that. He seemed like a perfect fit for college and would have eventually been Head Coach at NIU in ten or so years.

Rick Stroud @NFLSTROUD
P.J. Fleck, the former Rutgers WR coach, resigned one day after becoming the OC at N. Illinois. Speculation he's joining Bucs' Schiano

You should worry more about that 12th-rated (in the Big 10) recruiting class that is rolling into Champaign.

I'm pretty sure Huskie fans will never see him coaching on our sidelines again. The way he went about it was very poor. He gave some lame story that he wasn't prepared just so he could take an NFL job. He should have just said that in the beginning and been honest with the fans. I find it hard to believe he couldn't handle being an OC but he interviewed for the NIU head coaching position when Kill left for Minny.

I was quite shocked to hear about this. From what I remember and what I have heard he was a class act type guy. I can't see him ever coaching for the Huskies again and I thought he was destined to eventually run the show there. Enjoy 2-3 years and then getting axed by the Bucs.

Odds are he'll never be in DeKalb again, but I wouldn't say never. He could be semi-succesful in Tampa, have a few more stops somewhere, then end up back at NIU. Or last 1 year in Tampa (I predict), and then have another stop or two.

Either way, NIU currently has a "stepping stone" coach - he won't be there long one way or another. There will be openings in the future that could be filled by Fleck.

UMN - he's nice enough, but Fleck is anything but the "down to earth" type. He's been over-hyped and over-praised since he could wipe himself.

Why did Schiano wait until the day after he took the OC job to offer him? Or do you think he upted the money?

I can't imagine that Tampa team being a fun one to work with unless they clean house with the roster. For a team with an attitude and locker room problem to begin with having career college guys come in and take the reins is going to be awkward.

Illinois is going to be bad for a long time. Like I said last year, the best team in the state is in Dekalb, & that will be the case for 3 or 4 years at least.

There are reports that Fleck has been named Head Coach for Western Michigan.

I really thought that he would get the NIU job.

Like i said before, i think he severely hurt his ties to his alma mater. If he ever came back to NIU in a coaching position it would be long down the road.

I think WMU really reached though with this hire. Unproven commodity. Dave Doeren was doing Fleck a favor by offering him the OC position a year ago. If it weren't for him being a former player he wouldn't have even been considered.
