I have a similar situation. The guy only drinks at our Fantasy Football draft and New Years Day. I usually drive as I sleep at the house we draft at. Meanwhile, he's stoned to the bejesus by the time we hit the Ryan. The only difference is that his wife proclaimed him the alcholic and I don't think he really agrees with the assessment. He drafted better than me this year.

If you know how bad he was at one time, getting drunk is nothing for this guy. Yes, I understand the whole thing about him being an addict and thus he cant take anything, but being drunk one day is a far stretch from gone missing for 2 weeks, not sleeping and doing meth in an empty semi for days on end. Which he did many many times for periods longer than this.

Do you think it would be better or possible for alcoholics/addicts to learn to manage their behavior rather than stop it? I wonder sometimes.

I do know a guy that once every 6 months he has a big night of drinking and doesnt drink at all other than that.

He claims he is an alchy? Personally dont like the guy, but I kinda understand the mentallity. Friday night drink hard, feel like crap all day Saturday, do nothing but order pizzas and diet cokes, take a nap or 2, Sunday go workout....see Jack Daniels in 6 months.

Sounds like a typical Drinky Board weekend to me.

Maybe. It really wouldn't be a feasible plan for the harder drugs. Are there any in existance to manage or control the amount of alcohol eventually? There might be a point after you quit that you can then do it responsibly. There is something jarring to me about never ever having a drink again. Like it would drive me to absolutely fall off the wagon get plowed blind drunk on occasion.

Like when people fast or diet. They gorge afterward.

Agreed. I rarely drink. I rarely want a drink. I can go to a party where everyone is drinking and not have a drop but still have a great time. I think it would drive me nuts to not be able to have one.

This is incorrect, but certainly not due to a lack of trying. Did you know that flight attendants will actually cut you off at a certain point?

Damn. I really, really thought that you would catch that obscure reference. :?

Wade Boggs approves of that flight.

For those of you that answered politely I appreciate the response. For those of you that answered less than politely, I didn't mean harm or to say that alcoholics should be able to manage it. It was an honest question that I don't really know the answer to.

I don't have a lot of experience with drugs or alcohol issues. Drugs, even prescription or over, the counter scare me. I have almost no tolerance for alcohol. You guys have seen me plowed but that might only be 3-4 drinks. You guys have seen me have 1 or 2 or just water or coke for an evening.

My 60 year old uncle was a very high functioning alcoholic basically woke up one day and said what am I doing? I need to quit drinking. He went to 2 meetings and said he wasn't doing that anymore because it was depressing. He still doesn't drink and says he has no desire to. He feels great and that is good enough motivation. The nothing approach works for him but his life is go go go.

My 25 year old cousin admitted last year he had issues with it. It is causing him to become sort of reclusive which is making him depressed. He worries about what it means for the rest of his life. It seems like he cannot deal with never having a drink again. People manage some addictions or behaviors, I was thinking of him when I asked would it be possible or do they have a program for some people to learn how to manage it.

That is extent of my dealings with it. I really have no knowledge here. I do know that I couldn't do it. It would be setting me up for failure.

Every time I have met you, you were stuffing your face with food.

Screw off. I thought you were going to be some hilarious ultra cool stud. You get dorkier with every post lately.

I do eat a lot. I do not have a food addiction.

Is your wife out of town, you've been here the last 2 nights?

I think anyone can quit but it depends on the person. My family member did because his life and health was falling to pieces.

I will have a drink or two from time to time but I probably binge drink once a month or so. I've never felt the urge to do it become overwhelming, I just like to get black out drunk once in a while. I'd like to think that if it ever started to become an issue I could stop. I'm sure that is how all addicts feel.

I thought I had caught it, but I thought former Boston Red Sox Wade Boggs had drank about sixty (60) beers, so I was not sure that was what you meant.
