Edit: It's like you said about Andrew Luck. Given enough time, people will always try to talk them out of the sure thing. Since Rodgers was basically assumed the MVP this year since about Week 8, people were trying to find a reason to vote for someone else. This past Sunday gave people a small reason for doubt.
The reason for Rodgers was that he was statistically dominant. That's no longer true.

It's more that Brees has been almost as good the last 8 games as Rodgers was the first 8 games.

True, but the stats slightly favor Rodgers still and the record favors Rodgers. Not sure what else to go by.

Exactly. There's no question his best games this season have been better than Rodgers best games but the entire body of work favors Rodgers right now.

The Packers' Aaron Rodgers is the NFL MVP this year with the Saints' Drew Brees a close 2nd.

You have to keep in mind that Rodgers has over 100 less attempts than Brees. He also has thrown only 6 int's compared to Brees' 11. He has a few hundred rushing yds and 3 tds as well.

Why do people get upset when anyone other than Aaron Rogers is mentioned as an MVP candidate? It's not a slam on the guy. He's just slowed down a little from the greatest season ever by any football player, to best season ever by a quarterback to lets say one of the 3 best seasons ever played by a quarterback... and nobody says he's not the MVP, there's just a little hint of competition now.
I think if Peyton Manning played this year and had one of his typical years, this would be one of the best years ever (stat wise) at the quarterback position.

I think Tim Tebow has dropped out of the race.

I think you may be correct. He does own the single worst 4th quarter performance ever though.

I think Brees is going to make a serious run at it especially since no one thinks his supporting cast is as good as what Rodgers has.

Rodgers will win it if they go undefeated but I've heard from Packer fans that Flynn is a going to be great too. Therefore, Rodgers isn't that valuable.

Brees doesn't really have a shot. Everyone thinks his supporting cast is as good or better than Green Bay's. Rodgers is the MVP this year. The only question is if it'll be unanimous like Brady last year.

It wasn't unanimous. Rodgers got 48 votes, Brees was a close second with 2 votes.

How is the MVP not the offensive/defensive player of the year as well?

probably has to do with numbers...brees had to get some kind of award for the record breaking year. if it wasn't for rodgers stats and overall value, brees probably would've been the MVP. but i think the OPY award goes to the guy with the flashy numbers...i think rodgers may have had a higher QB rating and i think more intangibles go into the MVP award...all of these ellipses mean...i just don't know...but i'm guessing here.

It just seems like an excuse to give another "award".

I've seen that in High School and I think College as well where you can be conference player of the year but not first team all conference.

When did this Play of the year award get added to the mix.....not that I'm complaining about Randall Cobb taking it home.

Iirc, Warner and Faulk used to split those awards on those Rams teams. I think that's when I first heard of it.

Rodgers numbers were better. He should have won both awards.

Just to add, I liked the Awards show the NFL did for this. I just wished they weren't announced already since the show wasn't live.

I thought play of the year should have gone to Legarette Blount for his run against the Packers instead of Randall Cobb's kickoff return.

We did get some new awards, like NFL.com Fantasy Player of the year in Calvin Johnson.
