See Peeps, that's what I'm talking about when I say blacks can't be racist in larger American society. Jeremy Lin puts on his street clothes and he isn't facing racism. Nobody refuses to rent him an apartment. His skin isn't going to have an effect on whether a corporation hires him or not.

But within a micro-society like organized basketball, you can get a good glimpse at what black racism looks like. He was by far the best schoolboy player in the state of California and he didn't get a sniff on a scholarship. Now he shows up in the NBA and rather than being treated like any other guy who just dropped 38 on the Lakers, he's viewed as some exotic creature. That's racism. That's the basketball culture at work. I'm sure there are people here who believe blacks are inherently superior at hoops. I know our favorite radio hosts do. And within the structure of organized basketball blacks have power that they lack in our larger society. Racism.

The big difference is that Jeremy Lin can walk out of that gym and he isn't facing racism. Black people can't walk out of their lives.
