Any group is capable of racism depending on circumstances. It's not that blacks are inherently incapable of racism. That would be a racist viewpoint itself. It's that the history and current conditions in the United States of America make it impossible for them to be racists. Although, I have pointed out the example of black racism within the micro-society of organized basketball.
Why would basketball not be considered part of American society? If someone can be racist in a subsection of society they are by definition capable of being racist in the larger society. That is the problem with talking in absolutes like you are.

Sure it's a part of it, but it plays a major role in the lives of so few people as to be insignificant.

I point it out because it's interesting to see black Americans practicing racism the way they have/are with regard to Lin. And to illustrate that blacks aren't immune to being racist given a structure wherein they can be.

Didn't you just say upthread (or maybe another thread) that Asians can't be the victims of racism?

I appreciate Asians because they don't get all militant when you crack a joke (personally not weirdo professional groups). If you tell an Asian man he has a small penis, he pleasantly laughs and says "Ha ha yes, small penis."

I'm afraid to say anything around Blacks because God forbid I forget that their ancestors were raped by watermelons or some crap like that and they go talking that race card bullshit and give you that Oh no he didn't look.

Right. He's only facing racism within a very specific and small segment of his life. Racism isn't simply discrimination, although it often results in it. It's a belief that there are qualities inherent in the races that make one superior to another.

I don't think black or white Americans feel they are superior to Asians, do you? At least not when it comes to the normal everyday lives we all lead. Within the small subculture of organized basketball, there's obviously anti-Asian racism. That's why when Lin once tried to enter a lockerroom at a hoops tournament he was advised by a security guard that no volleyball was happening that day. But- and this can serve to answer BRick's statement as well- there is some humor in that even though it's clearly racist, because the circumstances aren't dire. There's a world of difference between an Asian kid not getting a look from pro basketball scouts becuase of racism within a relatively tiny micro-society and an American black man being denied promotions or housing opportunities because of it. Is that fair?

He's a professional basketball player. Even you agree that he is facing racism in his workplace. (Entertainment for us, workplace for him).
Because of his chosen career, he also faces the racist remarks through social media and mainstream media, to some extent.

I'm cool because I am not racist, I'm just politically incorrect AKA Honest.

In fact in college, I remixed PM Dawn's Reality Used to be a friend of mine into RACISM USED TO BE A FRIEND OF MINE. Because I stopped being racist.

I just can't buy what you are selling here if you consider basketball to be insignificant.

A chuckle can be had about a lot of things. You seem to be attempting to scold me, but I would suggest that a more outlandish position is to equate gigantic obstacles that must be scaled by Harvard educated Americans of Chinese descent in the world of organized basketball with what the average black American faces during the course of his or her lifetime in the United States.

I think White and Proud's idiotic post says a lot. Do you find each paragraph equally offensive?

True. But the personal and the political are two different things. Perhaps for him the racism he faces hurts as much as anything a black American has ever faced. (I doubt it.)

But when we stand outside and look at this stuff, I don't think our concern over the fact that racism caused Larry Bird to feel like a loser when he was asked to guard another white player should be equivalent to our concern that there are still some neighborhoods where realtors won't sell a rich black man a house.

There are different levels/extremes of everything. But at least you acknowledge that it exists.

Of course.

I just have a much more difficult time working up outrage over the fact that a security guard might think Lin was the towel boy than I do over a lot of other shit.

That scene where the nerds go looking for housing is great. The asian guy goes to a house where a stern Japanese man opens the door. The home owner says a bunch of stuff in Japanese and then ends with "Nerd!".

JORR it's almost impossible that you haven't mentioned Muslim Arabs in this thread when talking about minority groups who are the most discriminated against here in the US.

Like I said, FF, discrimination and racism aren't the same things. I wasn't talking about discrimination except as a manifestation of racism. People discriminate against Muslims, J-ews, Latinos. That happens all the time. I'm not trying to brush it off as nothing. It simply wasn't what the conversation was about.

No, I understand your racism comes through power theory(although I disagree with it), but even under your theory Muslims are the most discriminated(victims of racism) minority group in this country right now.

Yeah. And fat people. And short people.

Here's something interesting. I don't know if anyone else saw it, but it was a show about online dating. They had an expert who worked for one of the big outfits- I don't remember if it was E- harmony or Plenty of Fish, whatever. But he was a guy who worked on algorithms attempting to figure out what qualities men and women respectively found attractive. Anyway, the two major things women wanted were big salaries and height. He said education for a guy was important. It doesn't mean anything for a woman. Since women are more attracted to taller men, he attempted to figure out how much more money a guy needed to make to make up a height disadvantage. What he came up with is that a guy who is 5'9" needs to earn $40,000 more per year than a guy who is 5'10" to get equal interest.

I think the key words in FF's post were "right now". Not saying I agree or disagree.
