I see women in my neighborhood everyday in full burqa. It's disquieting to say the least. I don't really think we can have a nation of people walking around with their faces covered, even under religious freedom as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

At some point, if there are so many members that disagree with the vocal leadership of a group, they either have to seize control of that group or accept that the are going to be viewed through the same prism as their leaders or loudest members.

I think Christians are stereotyped and denigrated by the mainstream media in the U.S. far more than Muslims.

Of course that guy is still a Muslim, if he calls himself one. Who are we to question his faith? I'm guessing the number of Christians who don't live strictly by the bible is sky-high. I disagree with your last sentence, obviously.

 I know you typed that in bernstein's meatball voice. That's how I read it anyway.

I guess I can put that in a better way. Anyone can be whatever they want. But if you're choosing to be part of a group that supports all kinds of ideas and philosophies that are diametrically opposed to the values of the country you're residing in and the values of the vast majority of citizens of that country, you should expect what comes with that.

I just watched a Gangland episode on white supremacists. The majority of guys in the group broke no laws, at least not that they showed or explained. But we judge them by their beliefs and the ideas they support.

Let me put it more simply. There's a vast difference between judging someone based on his ideas and judging him based on the color of his skin.

 JORR - you're almost proving my point from earlier again now by comparing Muslims to white supremecists. The vast majority of Muslims, especially here in the US, are very peaceful. One of the Ivy league professors did a study not long ago and found that a Christian is 3x more likely to justify violence over his beliefs than a Muslim. I'll try to find it.

I think you could replace Muslim with people of middle eastern descent and everything I said in this thread would still be just as true.

Are you freaking serious, dude?

My truck broke down about a year and a half ago in a white neighborhood in River Forest, right off of Lake St. I wasn't bothering anyone, just checking out my truck, seeing what is going wrong with it when not 1, but 2 River Forest police cars pull up because they were informed from someone in the "neighborhood" that I was having some problems with my car. .

I'll bet Zambrano thought you were Derek Lee coming to get some retribution and called the cops .

Who knows why they're detaining your friend? Yeah, it's probably because of his ethnicity. You can't really tell a terrorist by his looks. But the fact is that recent terror attacks on planes have been carried out as part of a Muslim jihad. I'm guessing your friend isn't a Muslim. Which opens up the question of whether Muslims (or Saudi nationals or whoever)- or those that fit the profile of them based on looks, actions, etc.- should be targeted for greater security measures. That's a sensitive subject.

it's racial profiling. that's the point. he's "brown" as they say. so because of that, he gets detained as if he were muslim. he's from india and grew up in england.

What do you mean detained? Like, he's taken to a private room and questioned? I've flown to and from New York a lot, and they have stricter security standards, and the most I've seen anyone get is a more thorough bag search(my wife included).

I understand it's racial profiling. But as a society we seem to have agreed that flying on a commercial airliner is a special privilege. The rights we have as American citizens don't really exist once you make the choice to get on that commercial jet. Would you agree with that? For me, that concept is reinforced every damn time I fly. So I'm suggesting that it isn't the same thing as pulling spmack over for driving while black in River Forest.

Like I said, it's a sensitive subject. For me personally, I'd be willing to take special flights where those getting on them agreed to waive all security measures and take our chances just so I didn't have to stand in line and take off my fucking shoes. The reality is, that isn't going to happen. So the question becomes, should resources be spent searching and hassling those who are less likely to commit acts of terror in the sky or directed at those who fit a particular profile of one likely to do so based upon certain criteria?

It's not nitpicking. "Detained" means he's getting treated differently and sounds a lot worse than he often has an extra bag check.

As I said, I've seen a lot of bag searches being done, and they seem to be at least somewhat random. Maybe international travel is different.

What's being lost?

I'm pretty sure if argumentative pricks who graduated from Purdue and now live in New York had committed multiple acts of terror on airplanes, BRick would be the first guy to tell you he would accept heightened security and temporary detention before he flew. I'm not sure if I agree with that or not. I just don't think it's quite as evil as you seem to be suggesting.

 That's actually an interesting point. New Yorkers in general don't seem to care much about the extra security here. I've had my bag searched multiple times just waiting in line for the plane. They basically go down the line and ask you to open your bag and they have a pointer stick that does a quick search of it.

It's just security and in a post 9/11 world that is how it is.

Since the majority of the inmates in the penal system are black, its reasonable for police to pull them over in order to make sure there isn't a crime in progress. When questioned about it, the police can say they're just in a heightened state of security.
