It's not nitpicking. "Detained" means he's getting treated differently and sounds a lot worse than he often has an extra bag check.

As I said, I've seen a lot of bag searches being done, and they seem to be at least somewhat random. Maybe international travel is different.

What's being lost?

I'm pretty sure if argumentative pricks who graduated from Purdue and now live in New York had committed multiple acts of terror on airplanes, BRick would be the first guy to tell you he would accept heightened security and temporary detention before he flew. I'm not sure if I agree with that or not. I just don't think it's quite as evil as you seem to be suggesting.

 That's actually an interesting point. New Yorkers in general don't seem to care much about the extra security here. I've had my bag searched multiple times just waiting in line for the plane. They basically go down the line and ask you to open your bag and they have a pointer stick that does a quick search of it.

It's just security and in a post 9/11 world that is how it is.

Since the majority of the inmates in the penal system are black, its reasonable for police to pull them over in order to make sure there isn't a crime in progress. When questioned about it, the police can say they're just in a heightened state of security.

Now something definitely is being lost. The part about flying being a special privilege. We all waive rights when we fly commercial.

It's not racism at all. But I don't want to get into that discussion again.

The question is whether airport security should discriminate at security checkpoints based upon certain criteria. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it. But it sure isn't the same thing as hassling a black guy in a white neighborhood simply because of his skin color and it's a disservice to black Americans to suggest it is.

I just want to know when I'm allowed to discriminate so I don't miss out on the fun.

I'm not sure what the answer is. Do you feel that the ninety-year-old Italian-American woman from Bridgeport should get the exact same scrutiny as the 26-year-old Saudi with an Egyptian passport who is wearing a turban hat and carrying the Q'ran before they both get on the same 747 with you?

I'm not certain about the answer, but I know the question is far more complicated than a jerkoff cop fucking with spmack because he made the "mistake" of turning down a side street in a lily white suburb.

Its pretty standard for cops to stop and check out stranded motorists. Especially in the suburbs where they have a little less to do than city cops.

Im not denying or saying anything about what happened to SPmack but at face value cops stopping isnt rare or limited to them being suspicious.

NYPD Stop-And-Frisks Increased 14 Percent In 2011; 87 Percent Of Those Stopped Black Or Hispanic

The NYPD has broken their record for stop-and-frisks in a single year...again. New York's finest stopped an interrogated people 684,330 times in 2011, according to The Wall Street Journal, a 14 percent increase over 2010.

And who was it that got stop-and-frisked the most? 92 percent of those stopped were males, and 87 percent of those stopped were black or Hispanic, a glaring disparity considering blacks and Hispanics make up only 59 percent of the city's population.

Just 12 percent of those stopped were arrested.

"Last year alone, the NYPD stopped enough totally innocent New Yorkers to fill Madison Square Garden more than 30 times over," NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said in a statement. "It is not a crime to walk down the street in New York City, yet every day innocent black and brown New Yorkers are turned into suspects for doing just that. It is a stunning abuse of power that undermines trust between police and the community."

The NYCLU isn't alone in their anger. Councilman Jumaane Williams (who experienced a little NYPD friskiness first-hand), Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Professor Cornel West have all expressed criticisms-- with Williams and Stringer even calling on the federal government to investigate.

The program has also proved a legal liability to the embattled police department (which is still enjoying high approval ratings). This summer a federal judge gave the green light to a lawsuit against the NYPD, accusing cops of discriminating against blacks and Hispanics. And, as The Village Voice notes, "In the month of January alone, more than three dozen lawsuits alleging improper stop-and-frisks were filed, based on a Voice reading of the complaints. Extrapolated, that means that the city could be sued more than 400 times this year alone just on improper stops."

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne echoed Mayor Bloomberg's and Ray Kelly's defense of the program. From The Journal:

"Stops save lives,"Mr. Browne said. He estimated that over the past 10 years, there were 5,628 fewer homicides than in the decade before Mr. Bloomberg took office.

"That is a remarkable achievement--5,628 lives saved--attributable to proactive policing strategies that included stops," Mr. Browne said.

Homicides were down 4% in 2011 and remained under 600 for the 10th straight year. Overall, major crime, which includes violent offenses and serious theft, ticked up by less than 1%.

Mr. Browne said 8,263 weapons, including 819 guns, were recovered as a result of stops.

According to the NYCLU, stop-and frisks have increased 600 percent since Mayor Bloomberg took office in 2002.

RPB, I wasn't sitting around with my hazard lights on, and I wasn't on a main street. I was off of Lake St, so the only way the cops would have known I was there is if someone called.

Jorr and his white guilt believes he should be given a pass. He has set the bar so low that he doesn't believe that blacks should be expected to act like decent human beings. I know he believes he's defending blacks but it's really insulting.

JORR confuses me sometimes. On one hand, he seems in tune with the plight of American minorities. But on the other hand, he wasn't willing to admit that American poverty is comparable to that of places abroad.

I don't have "white guilt". Why would I feel guilt over something I'm not responsible for? That doesn't stop me from understanding history and being cognizant of the American condition.

I can't speak to Whitlock since I'm not very familiar with his work, but it's natural that black people would buy into the racist ideas themselves. They live in the same society. That's the whole point of Black Pride. I'm sure you know that, HOVA. There was a time when black men stood up and said, "I am a man." They weren't just saying that to white society in the United States. They were saying it to themselves too.

In these discussions, I've mentioned the micro-society of organized basketball to illustrate that blacks can be racist given the power structure. What you're saying with regard to Whitlock is evident in the beliefs expressed by B&b with "I hate white basketball" and Larry Bird considering it an insult that he was sometimes asked to guard another white player. Those are examples of whites accepting- buying into- the myth of black superiority within a very specific subculture.

saying that is not racist it is factual...did blacks have it real bad in this country in the past? yes..but i think the playing field has been leveled..the current black man does not have it any harder than the current white man imo

312chas, I think a lot of us think the playing field has gotten better, but its nowhere near level in a lot of areas.

you disagree?

Yes.

I dont think its a fact that blacks are better at basketball but we'd have to define what constitutes better numbers wise

I also disagree that black and white men have it equal in today's society
