Due to his condition, and intense drinking, this isn't really a surprise.

Every time that "___ beers in one sitting" story gets told, the number gets bigger. I bet it was like 9 beers...

I love the story Heenan tells about Andre on the plane.

Andre is messing with the armrest and the stewardess asks him if she can get him anything. He says "screwdriver."

She comes back 10 minutes later with an actual screwdriver instead of the drink.

Andre asks her "What would you have brought if I asked for a Bloody Mary?"

 In his book he adds that he pulled the stewardess aside and told her that next time a 7'4" 500 lb giant gets on her plane that it would be wise to not give him tools.

While I love all the old Andre stories I have never really gotten the whole Andre the Giant love. Maybe it is because I never got to see a lot of his older work where I understand he could actually work a little in the ring. He was just a huge guy who would throw some slaps and couldn't talk much at all.

He actually could move pretty good in his younger days. His earlier matches with Hogan from 79 and 80 were completely different from the Wrestlemania III stuff. I'm not saying he was Dynamite Kid-like worker, but he was an okay big man.

I used to feel the exact same way. My main vision of Andre was WM III, The Colossal Connection, and a horrible mult. Especially once taken over by the agent of bad who shall not be named. But he was an athlete in his prime, and drew huge money everywhere he went. Absolute feature, but when promoted properly was huge. No pun intended.

I shook hands with Andre once at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He didn't smell too good.

WM III was Andre at the beginning of a steep decline. The closer you get to (looking it up) '73, the more fluid a guy you got.

Andre was over because he was a big guy who could move. He could do beat downs; he could do comedy. He drew for several reasons.

One, he couldn't stay anywhere for long. The guy's far bigger than most rosters at the time. So he was always fresh in fans' eyes.

Two, he was willing to work. He put people over, made guys look good.

Three, back when he was young, they put him in with the heavy hitters and he did fine -- again, willing to work. He got cred by doing shoot-like matches, and he made the shooters look good. As he got older, he was willing to do comedy bits. I remember when he picked up his tag partner, Ice Man Parsons, and threw Parsons right at the other team.

Four, he was a sight for audiences that love to gawk at the freaks. The Japanese fans come to mind.

Now, what's this about his being dead (again)? I didn't hear anything about his resurrection.

Come on! Has there ever been a wrestler who came across more likeable than Andre?

JORR I would figure Andre was a little too modern for your taste. I figured you would be more a fan of Jackie Fargo.

I don't remember ever seeing Fargo much, but I did get a kick out of the Fabulous Ones.
