I think Weber has a type of player that he likes to coach and has an ability to coach. However, his type of players are usually not top talent type of guys but more good character guys. I think he got caught up in the media bashing he was taking about not being able to recruit and started to recruit talent guys who weren't really his cup of tea to make people happy.

I'm not saying he would have won more games with his type of guys, but I think those teams would at least respond to the way Weber coaches and may even be more competitive. From day 1 at Illinois, Weber was not wanted and he took a lot of heat every year about one thing or the other. It's too bad this is how it will end for him at Illinois. Hopefully, he will be back at SIU or a similar place being able to coach his way and have success with it.

He was never flexible either on offense. As Rick mentioned earlier, I'd have been feeding Leonard that whole game. He owned the Iowa bigs and probably could have put up 30+

I think AAU basketball has a bit to do with it. The top talent plays on these teams that have little to no coaching while boosting egos. By the time the kids get to college, they lack the understanding needed to run proper offenses and play good defense. Coaches should be able to teach them that, but that has not happened at all the last few years at Illinois. The team looks terribly dumb quite often because of the obvious lack of basketball intelligence.
That's an interesting point but I think there is another level. Weber probably can't handle the modern player who has learned how to play from AAU. The same thing happened to Keady who obviously is a big influence. The good coaches can get those players to play in a way that makes the team successful. Weber probably had no idea how to turn this AAU team into a college basketball team.

If you watched this team all season, there's really no one else to blame but Weber. I'm not a guy to slam a coach, but early on this team had confidence and at one point I wouldn't have been surprised if they had beaten anyone. He allowed them to lose their mojo to the point where it became a surprise if they beat anyone. The crazy speech after the Purdue game was just the last straw.
What could he do though? They plays were designed to get the ball to Leonard all day today. It was hard to tell because of Weber's voice, but it sounded like he spent most of the game yelling to get the ball to Meyers. If your guards want to get their shots though you can't really do anything besides bench them. I think Weber's speech after the Purdue game basically admitted that he should have been benching players for not following his directions.

He's a system guy and system guys who are not flexible struggle when they move up. At some point, players tune you out and stop buying into the system and do their own thing.

But even when they were going good they had trouble getting the ball into Leonard. The way they fell apart strikes me as a problem with effort and leadership more than flaws in the offense or the way the players suited it.

Yeah, I was hoping they wouldn't. Finish this out and move on.

It's in his head 24/7.

Probably after the NCAA Championship game so it doesn't draw too much attention away from the tourney.
