It's not just this year. Seems to happen all the time.

Maybe the players feel that they have to play better to prove that the only thing wrong was the coach.

Or maybe they feel guilty for getting the coach fired.

Or maybe its a coincidence.

I think we've hit on the respective formula for winning in both winter sports. In hockey, stop all checking. In basketball, switch coaches after each game.*
