Mt. Carmel has kicked out some very intelligent people that became successful because they refused to button their top button.

A school loses a talented student over a top button.

Who is dumber? The kid or the school?

It's easy to say that, but sometimes it's hard to expect teenagers to conform. I was that way. I'm not saying it's right, but I didn't like authority and rules at that age either.

I understand that, but rules is rules. They are a private institution so you know what you're getting into. If you're willing to get bounced over a button, I'm not saying you're dumb but you did it to yourself...

I disagree.

Yes, he broke the rule, but its a stupid rule.

The school should revise it so they dont lose talented students over such non sense.

I will punch you in the fucking jaw, but aside from that...

When I was a sophomore, I wanted to try out for basketball (PROVISO EAST, BABY!) but I had long hair and coach A.J. took one look at me and said, "Get out of here and come back when you get a haircut." I basically said fuck him. I didn't cut my hair and I didn't come back. Stupid? Yes. Typical teenage behavior? Probably.

and he gave your spot to a less talented player with a tight haircut.

Nice example to set.

I get what you are saying Roger, but that sets the tone for the inmates running the asylum so to speak.

What other rules should kids be able to pick and chose to follow at a private institution?

The rebuttle to the rule should probably be something more solid than "It's just a stipid rule". I had the same issue when I was a kid, so I get it. But there is a big difference between something oppresive or something that is an annoyance...

I'm also going to ignore the fact Mt. Carmel has no rule on buttoning the top button of your shirt unless it is a mass day when you are required to wear a tie.

The institution shouldnt have such stupid rules.

And they AGREE, thats why they changed it....

This may be the case currently but it has not always been that way.

Let me ask you a question

Do you follow all rules and customs blindly without ever questioning why?

What rebuttal do you mean?

The kid?

Im talking in a broader sense here. Yes the kid broke the rule and got kicked out. Fine.

Is the school better off without that kid? I dont think so.

What I'm saying is if the only thing a person can say (the kid in this instance) is that a rule is dumb, I don't think that the argument is strong enough.

I guess the kid (in this example) would prefer to go to an institution that has more appropriate priorities.

Once the rule is changed, isnt the institution almost admitting fault?

It has been that way for at least 20 years. Plus now they were polos instead of dress shirts.

I donlt know. I understand the uniform thing. I've seen some crazy shit in school. If a school wants the kids all dressing the same, I'm good with it. If they tweek it later, I'm good with that too.

If the rule were, all white kids have to button their top button, that would be something worth fighting for.

Again, it sounds like the rule is just bothersome or annoying. Doesn't seem to be something worth fighting that hard for...

My example goes back more than 20 years.

And the changes help my point I think.

I just think that conformity and discipline are emphasized a little more than they should be in our educational systems.

Not nearly as important in real life as they make it seem in school, no matter where you work

Whats trivial to one, is important to another.

Although, I think not going to the school in the first place would be the wisest play

I think private schools should stop stressing rules that kids disagree with and start having lax rules like public schools, I can not tell you how many times I hear people with kids in private schools say "man I wish I could send my kids to public schools so Jimmy doesnt have to wear a uniform!"

Also Good Dolphin's post made me do a spit take. Well done.

And while I am pissing people off, pro sports would never allow money to be held back because it would be touted as insulting to the athelete, not trying to help them from themselves.

I went to private schools for 12 years wearing uniforms all the way.

A lot of public schools have uniforms now.

The point is not uniforms. Its valuing conformity too much.

Just my opinion, man

And that touting would be correct.

But if you're good with that, Ill take 60% of your money and disperse it back to you over the next 10 years.

Thats exactly how it would be seen but like I said, I believe the author of the piece almost painted it like it was the leagues fault these guys are going broke and the onus is on them to try and fix that.
