Not a "conformist", RPB. Just a fan of picking ones battles and weighing the costs of ones actions.

Like I said before. There are things worth getting kicked out of school for. Dress code just isn't one of them. Are you there to learn or express your individuality?

I got A's and B's and I never kissed any ass and never stayed after or anything like that. I have never been a conformist. You sound like one of those guys who didn't do well in high school because you probably thought you were too cool to study or do your homework. I'm in school now, and I'm pullin solid A's without staying after or kissing ass because I do my homework, shut the fuck up and pay attention.

He does do his homework. He was making all kinds of balloon animals last time I saw him.

I guess my characterizing you as such is about as fair as you painting 312player as a "rebel without a clue" type, just because he doesnt follow all rules without question.

And what is worth what is different from person to person.

Just because something happened in a school that you consider worse doesnt mean everyone else should "just take it" cause its not as bad as _____

Learning to express individuality should definitely be part of the process.

you sound like a teenager

What is conformist about valuing knowledge? Those with less information are much less free.

I was a total conformist. Didn't rock the boat. Followed all the rules. Got straight A's. Got a great education. Turned that into an excellent career. Couldn't be happier.

I owe my life to buttoning that top button. Thank you, button. Tebow bless you.

I don't think there is anything wrong with uniforms in schools. In fact my sister went to both catholic and public schools and said she wished they had uniform so she did not have to worry about what to wear everyday.

Most professions have dress codes...

To me, a uniform in school is a way to learn how to follow simple rules.

Some of that is being a teenager. You can be mangy in a uniform. I know I was.

Yes, but you can still choose what to wear, you're not wearing the same thing every day, day in day out. Also, it's not just following simple rules, I believe it has more to do with keeping out gang colors/social status or popularity. If you come to school/work looking like a mangy mutt, chances are you don't take pride in your appearance and will most likely trickle down to other things. Now I know that's not always the case, but it more prevalent than not.

I don't think uniforms in most private schools have much to do with gang colors... Social status and popularity - maybe, but that's part of their teaching following rules, not what's popular

Why? Do you think that gangs and gang colors are not prevalent in private schools because those schools cost money to get into? I went to a Catholic high school and we had more gangs than the public schools around us. Just because you can afford to go to a private school doesn't eliminate the fact that gangs are an influence anywhere you go.

I don't think gang colors are the reason why students are required to wear a uniform in schools. My response had nothing to do with the wealth of gang member's parents. I personally think it's to teach the students to follow rules.

My oldest is in first but I imagine it gets worse. A few of the girls are concerned with what they wear. An example this year was ugg boots. Other girls want to follow suit. Parents are torn whether or not to buy them but really what 7 yo needs $100 boots or worry about it. A uniform equalizes everybody to some degree.

It's not so bad with the boys. I can put my son in the jumping bean (kohl's) and circo (target) stuff. I want my daughter (and myself) to fit in, it needs to be a little better. It's crazy and they are only 7 and 4. I remember how I needed about 5 pairs of cavariccis and IOU sweatshirts at 13.

No they are/were huge in my community. Middle class, middle age, SAHMs. I can't tell if they are on their way out. Some one will go downtown or read a magazine/blog and let me know soon.

Girls seem more aware of appearance and how they fit in but boys have fashion issues too. It's weird. You buy a $5 shirt, put them in it and send them to school. It should be okay. Next time you go to put it on them they tell you they can't wear it. Firetrucks, dinosaurs, sharks, some cartoon character, or whatever is lame. All sorts of thoughts go though my head then.

Uniforms make life easier, I think. They are cheaper, they make everybody almost the same, and there is no discussion about what to wear. My daughter is one of those kids that gets laughed at by other moms and old ladies in the grocery store. It'd be awesome not to do that somedays.
