Of course. This was the guy from the get go. They were so in love with him they talked in depth to Smart and Stevens just to make sure this was the right guy.

I assumed you were infallible in matters of sports and sports-media.

Kinda like the Pope. Minus the silent consent of child sexual assault.

I think it's pretty obvious they tried to get a deal done with Smart. I wouldn't be so sure about Stevens.

If Frank Martin can go to South Carolina, and Illinois is above South Carolina, they should have got a better coach.

If Michigan beats Ohio, this guy isn't even brought up.

And if Ohio beats North Carolina he's the hottest coach in the country.

The Smith as an assistant has been a rumor for a while.

Yes, but more of a stretch, Groce has been a string rumor, but Smith is not confirmed. Groce alleged to be a done deal.

Smith won't come as an assistant, certainly not for Groce.

So when all this shakes out it is likely that Southern Illinois has a better coach than Illinois

Even worse than that.....Indiana might have a better coach.

There are a few CSFMB members who make more that Groces annual $250K salary. He can make 10 times that at Illinois.
This was their #1 guy from the beginning!!!

That was probably going to be the case no matter who was hired. The Public League coaches managed to blame poor old Ray Meyer because Teddy Grubbs was batshit crazy. We're talking about a very fickle bunch. I don't think it's good policy to make hiring decisions based on their thoughts. If it were, you should just grab one of the Irvin boys.

I've never understood the whole public league coaches thing. I would have laughed if my coach tried to give me college advice back in high school. If I were a player I'd just assume every word of advice from these coaches was financially influenced invalidating anything they had to say. "So coach, you think I should go to Kentucky? Well they fucked up by giving you money that should have gone to me."

It would be fun to have a little IRS sting for unreported income on these guys.

But you're hitting the general mentality of college athletes. They don't seem to mind making millions for Big State U, while the coach gets millions himself and they get a few credits toward a valuable degree in sports marketing or kinesiology.

If I am a kid either attending or about to attend Illinois on a basketball scholarship, I am looking into options anywhere else.

We are fast approaching Michael McCaskey levels of bad.

Funny you said that. I was just going to post about how Illinois appears to be taking PR advice from the Bears.
