Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen might want to stay out of the political spotlight and stick to what's on the playing field after becoming embroiled in yet another controversy.

Guillen is quoted in Time magazine that he loves former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and respected him for remaining in power for 50 years.

Those quotes have stirred up a considerable controversy in Miami, particularly with the large Cuban expatriate community that fled from the Communist-held island over the last half-century.

Team officials even took the unusual step of issuing a statement -- without Guillen's consent -- essentially vilifying Castro, who is in poor health and has ceded over the country's presidency to his brother Raul.

"There is nothing to respect about Fidel Castro," the team's statement said. "He is a brutal dictator who has caused unthinkable pain for more than 50 years. We live in a community filled with victims of this dictatorship, and the people in Cuba continue to suffer today."

When Guillen realized the severity of his quotes and the fallout it was causing in the Cuban-American community, he quickly retreated and retracted those comments, also taking the rare step of having a closed-door meeting with the team's beat writers before Saturday's game with the Cincinnati Reds to try and explain his comments and how they were reportedly taken out of context.

"I will apologize if I hurt somebody's feelings, or I hurt somebody's thought," Guillen told the writers. "I want them to know I'm against everything 100 percent -- I repeat it again -- the way this man (been) treating people for the last 60 years."

Guillen caused another stir late last September when he was introduced as the Marlins' new manager, saying he did not support the president of his native land, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

"Don't tell my wife that, because she hates that man. She hates him to death," Guillen said. "I supported Chavez? If I was supporting Chavez, do you think I would be manager of the Marlins? I never supported Chavez."

But reports eventually emerged that Chavez had twice appeared on the Venezuelan leader's national radio show in October 2005, right after the then-Guillen managed White Sox had won the World Series.

"Not too many people like the president. I do. My mom will kill me, but it's an honor to talk to the president," Guillen said at the time.

Ironically, Guillen became a U.S. citizen the following year (2006) and has become increasingly critical of Chavez and his policies ever since. Among his comments: "It's not my fault Chavez is the president. I didn't put him there. ... We got what we deserved."

And somehow Cowley will blame this on Kenny Williams.

Kenny will defer the blame to Gregg Williams.

It wasn't Ozzie's fault. He thought they were asking about Ramon Castro.

I really do not think Fidel and Castro are nearly as bad as they are made out to be, but it is weird that Ozzie hates one and likes the other.

I do. I meant Chavez. Ozzie hates Chavez. Magginolo Ordonez is a big supporter of Chavez which might have led to part of the conflict.

But whatever you think, saying you like Castro is not going to work in a community who is run by a political machine of people pissed off at Castro.

One of the biggest problems with Ozzie Guillen is that he thinks "being honest" and "saying whatever is in your head" are exactly the same thing.

A lot of people do this.

In the community, people call it "keeping it 100". No, you're an asshole. There's a difference.

The worst human rights violations that have taken place in Cuba in recent years have taken place in U.S. run Guantánamo Bay.

That you know of.

I'm not doubting the veracity of your information, just simply stating that you don't know what goes on inside Cuba, esp. concerning Castro and how he holds onto power or what he does to dissenters or the like.
