This is for Ozzie Guillen publicly sharing love for Fidel Castro. That's a fair statement. However, anyone who still "loves" Joe Paterno is not granted the same luxury.

I guess supporting a powerful man who is a football coach that did something bad is significantly worse than supporting an actual dictator that did things much worse for decades.

That comparison isn't fair though. You have to compare Paterno to Castro and Paterno "lovers" to Castro "lovers".

I agree that what Paterno did is worse than what Ozzie did. However, those who "love" Paterno are much better than those who "love" Castro.

You think so? I didn't see it that way.

It's Guillen being stupid versus Paterno being stupid. Or possibly more in Bernstein's wheelhouse, Paterno supporters being stupid vs Guillen's Castro love being stupid.

Castro has made few public comments in recent years, but he did support Paterno publicly.

You can't really compare the two.

Paterno had knowledge of a crime or at least heard reports that a crime may have occurred and did nothing. Guillen merely said he respected a dictaitor because he was able to hold power for more than 50 years. I don't see how either of those are similar.

It's the spin I was trying to write. I get what you and RPB are saying, but if Berns were to address the point, it will be re-spun into something I believed Bernstein will try and say.

You are comparing Paterno and Guillen. That's not the comparison. Guillen loves Castro. Paterno supporters love Paterno.

If I called up the show today and said "I love Joe Paterno" how would I be treated? Would it be just a stupid comment and let's move on?

Ok.

I think people can still "support" Paterno by saying he was a great coach/leader for decades while at the same time condemning the man for what happened at the end of his career.

Just as you can "support" Castro for holding power for decades while condemning the actions he has taken over the years.

That's kind of the point of this thread. Dan Bernstein disagrees with your first sentence. He seems to agree with your second or at least thinks it's no big deal.

That's the rub and where he'll go if asked this question. It's certainly debatable whether Ozzie actually supports Castro as a whole. I'd argue he doesn't.

"I love Fidel Castro". It doesn't get more clear than that.

How many people in the whole world would you say that about?

But there's more to that quote. . And subsequent re-explanations. He's not sticking to that point. Conceptually I see where you are going, but Ozzie's statement isn't as black and white as it needs to be for this question to really work. Factor in some potential cultural and linguistic issues with Ozzie using the term 'love' as well.

There is also more context to someone saying "I love Joe Paterno".

I can promise you if Ozzie had the same quote but replaced Fidel Castro with Joe Paterno then it would be a huge deal. I mean, he seems to have more of a problem with Robbie Gould not publicly bashing Paterno than he did with Ozzie saying he loved Fidel Castro.

It's a situation where he wants people who bought into the rhetoric that was being spouted to turn on a mentor vs another dumbass celebrity spouting off his political views.

I'd rather see the former than the latter, myself.

I don't know. It's conjecture at this point obviously. Dan seems to focus most of his hatred on former players/students/alumni/people in the area who should 'know' better. If the haven't come out swinging against JoePa, then he's gone after them hard.

I could see him using the same out of town stupid style argument to dismiss Ozzie if you did replace Castro with Paterno.

I'm looking for a way to spin this in a pro-B&B manner. Having difficulty doing so.

Good job Brick.

Dan's a screaming brainless meatball in re: all things Ozzie.

And Id argue that no one who loves Paterno as a coach supports child rape.

Well there was at least one person who loved Paterno as a coach that supported child rape. He actually engaged in it.
