When I was in college, they didn't know how to "classify" weed. Some thought it a sedative. Others considered it a hallucinogen.

I knew alcohol was a depressant, so it was easier to keep it at an arm's length. Not saying I didn't have my share of stupid moments or mornings when I prayed to the porcelain Gods, but alcohol wasn't really my drug of choice. Weed was. And for some time now, unbeknownst to me, they've classified that sweet, sticky bud as a depressant. Oops.

I thought I was a heavy user. Smoked it three times a day during the week (while enjoying Bob Stroud's "One 45 at 1:45" on the commute home, following afternoon chores, and likely again an hour or two before bedtime). First week in treatment I pissed 31 nans. One guy in the program told me he pissed 3700. My urine was clean 12 days after stopping. Sweating it out in the gym everyday likely assisted in getting it out of the system quickly. It usually takes a lot longer.

That doesn't mean that I didn't have issues with it. It was a "best friend" when other avenues of "relationships" didn't meet my expectations. I NEVER will suggest to others they have a problem with it or other substances. I'm in the working-on-myself business. If you smoke and it doesn't disrupt your life, God bless. I've enjoyed the company of several board members while toking on a number and I had an absolute blast doing so.

I had a problem with it... and while the AMA still suggests it isn't addictive, I know a dozen or so people with whom I fellowship on Sundays in the 800 block of N. Dearborn who would beg to differ.

Brother William (Liam Sullivan), the Timothy Leary-like drug guru, pushes Joe too far and Joe says:
"Marajuana is the flame, heroin is the fuse, LSD is the bomb. So don't you try to equate liquor to marajuana, Mister, not with me. You may be able to sell that jazz to another pothead, but not to somebody who holds some sick kid's head while he vomits and wretches on a curbstone at 4:00 in the morning. And when his legs get enough starch into them so he can stand up and empty his pockets, you can bet he'll have a stick or two of marajuana. And you can double your money he'll turn up a sugar cube or a cap or two. So don't you con me with your mind expansion slop. I deal with kids every day. I try to clean up the mess that people like you make out of 'em. I'm the expert here, you're not."
Brother William: "I may even sell you a few [ideas!]"
Friday: "You couldn't sell me directions to the men's room!"

Brother William: "I'm not only news, my friend, I make news. Big news."
Friday: "So did Judas."

The AMA may not classify it as addictive, but I have some friends who are addiction treatment specialists who would strongly disagree.

Lot of people on this board would agree with the AMA.

From what I understand, 10 to 30 percent of users can develop an addiction, while I'm sure there are some on this board who would say it's not addictive for them, there are others who probably fit in the 10-30 percent minority.

Weed is def. addictive. I smoked it for a long time before quitting many years ago. Yea I miss it sometimes but I value my family more. I met/worked with/partied with a friend of yours (David W) who played football at Highland and I met you once at a party so I hope things work out for you. Good luck!!

I like smoking non-addictive marijuana
I like a big ol' bump of that soothing speed
But what I really like is a big spoonful of heroin
Cause heroin always gives me what I need

I like a big shot of whiskey in the morning
And a big ol' shot of cocaine in the afternoon
Hell, I’ll shoot whatever you got, but man you best got a lot
'Cause I can see right now that yours will be gone real soon

Now, you say marijuana is not addictive
For you my friend, that might be true
You get the munchies, sit home, and watch your TV
But give me a hit, son and I’ll show you what that shit will do

I had stopped going to classes at Western in my first semester towards the beginning of November... of course, I'm not really bracing the family for this, because I am enjoying the recreational activities -- like a paid vacation. Then I go home for Christmas, the report card gets mailed there on the 22nd or something. My mom wants to save it as a Christmas present of sorts to open on Christmas Eve before we went to bed. I think I had three Fs, an Incomplete, and a C- in Calculus (I did manage to make it for the tests and had already taken it in HS.) Made for a really enjoyable Christmas. :)
My own present was getting to enroll late into the College of DuPage the next semester and take a four hour 8:00 AM Saturday philosophy class with a professor who didn't wake up until about 11:00 AM.

I smoked weed for a few years from about 1975 to 1977 because it was the '70's & it was the thing to do that everyone was doing. I never really liked it. Weed made me paranoid, depressed, & lazy. I felt just like the stereotypical "wow man" burnout. When I realized that I really didn't like being high & didn't enjoy myself after smoking, I quit. I was the first guy in my circle of friends that quit but it was easy for me. I stuck to my Budweiser tall boys.
Also experimented with some of the other usual suspects, Coke, Tic, Purple Mesc, Orange Sunshine, blotter, microdot, window pane, black beauties, & white cross. The only drugs that I ever really enjoyed was prescription amphetamine speed in pill form, but not really for the buzz, because you didn't really get high from speed, but the energy & stamina was unreal. 2 hours of sleep? No problem. 1 black beauty & your ready to go for 8 hours!
I once saw Zeppelin in 1977 after taking a hit of window pane in my eye. That was the last time I ever did that! One of the guys who I went to the concert with & who also hit the window pane via his eye, disappeared about halfway through the show & we didn't see him until we were leaving & he was standing in the hallway on one leg...& he thought he had lost his other leg.

Good luck Mac in your recovery, & be proud of yourself a little bit more with every sober day.

Wow. I would have never pegged you for that heavy of a pot smoker. You never really sounded like a stoner. I've known a few. I remember you hinting about it when you were on MJH, but I just thought it was just a weekend thing for you.

it is not addictive man...those dozen people are wrong...weed can be classified as sedative and an upper and a narcotic ...different strains effect the body differently ...thc % and cannabinoids/terps are the main determining factors.

Of course it's addictive. Anything that makes you feel good can be addictive. This message board can be addictive.

The only question is whether it is psychologically or chemically addictive or both. Then again, since your brain is simply a bunch of chemical reactions it's somewhat pointless for the non-scientists here to even care which is which.

When I had to go to Basic Training I had been smoking daily for years and didn't seem to notice much of a reaction when I stopped cold turkey. That may have been due to the extreme change of environment though.

nah, not the change in scenery ...marijuana is not addictive ...i smoke daily for years..quit and have zero withdrawal..physical or mental , none...have quit for 2 years with absolutely no side effects....there are always going to be people who are addicts..they get easily addicted to anything..food , t.v./puter, jogging, jerking off ..pretty much anything...i know SEVERAL people who were drunks...were on the brink of losing the most important things in their life like family, job etc...none drink now and got their life back on track and are much happier..these are not bums these are successful people who all smoke marijuana daily..booze destroyed their life and marijuana saved it.

You do realize just because you can temporarily stop something it doesn't mean you aren't addicted right? I can not post here for a while but ultimately I eventually come back.

Most people are addicted to something or multiple things. There is no reason why weed would be any different.

I am not sure how to explain it medically... Weed may not be physically addictive but as far as I can see if you use it to cope and can't deal without it then it has to be some form of an addiction process?

after reading your explanation, I guess you are blaming your mom for your self induced problems,

Is that correct?

Well, I think people say that because their is no physical addiction like with other drugs.

But I think anything that gets you high is obviously condusive to psychological addiction.

I would think that sometimes (maybe even most of the time) the mental part of the addiction is the toughest to kick. At least there are medications to help with the physical withdrawls.

Away from the curtains, away! Use your bucket!

Ignore these fools, Mac. Good luck in your recovery.

Godspeed Danny Mac. Wish you all the best.

I know that raising a son with autism magnifies the stress, anger, resentment, frustration and rage we face in everyday life. I just want you to know that while alcohol was my co-pilot when my son was first diagnosed, listening to the Heavy Fuel Crew (and, to be sure, Murph) on my drive home produced some joy in an otherwise rage filled situation.

Alas, I started to PTFB many years ago, but I still find your show entertaining when I do go back to the Score.

By Mac's logic, it makes no sense to wish him well as he has no control of what happens next. Its all genetics and disease.

You really only read/hear what you want to don't you? That way you can make it fit into your ignorant, small-minded view of the world.
