The Shaw / Smith collision was incidental contact. It isn't like Shaw went bertuzzi on him. Hawks played hard tonight, even if the PP & PK looked like crap.
Lots of penalty minutes in tonight's Hockey games. Both the Rangers/Senators, & Blues/Sharks games were loaded with cheap shots & sucker punches.
Screw the Phoenix Coyotes & their "15 years" logo at center ice. WOO HOO!!! The NHL should move them to Milwaukee.
Screw every other NHL team south of St. Louis too...

There's a rumor that they've already been signed, sealed, and delivered to Quebec City and all this "we found a potential owner" is just misdirection to sell tickets.

Milwaukee should be in the NHL, though I don't know if there's enough money in southern Wisconsin to support the Packers, Brewers, Badgers football/basketball, Marquette, Bucks, UWM hoops, aaaand a hockey team. They're spread pretty thin as it is.

I'm pretty sure that Wisconsin would support an NHL team. I've never understood why they didn't have a team. Its a good Hockey state.

"That's our territory."

And it's easy to forget, but the population of greater Milwaukee is on par with such teeming metropolises as Austin, Raleigh-Durham, and Salt Lake City, and the economy isn't exactly booming. Now yes, Wisconsin does love its sports, but the crowded marketplace is squeezing out the Bucks as it is.

My in-laws are in town, so I had to watch the game very quietly in my room while my wife slept, but reading this thread this morning was great, though I have one thing to add about the way the game ended:

Now, knock off the late game dramatics and finish the game earlier.

Could not be more false. Goalie helmets are not nearly as protective as regular helmets when it comes to handling hits. They are designed to stop pucks, not hits.

That said, this was a 2 minute goalie interference penalty and nothing more. I don't think Shaw is as innocent as some of you are suggesting, but Smith is also to blame for constantly going behind the net and sticking his vulnerable body parts in front of moving traffic. Shaw was going for the puck, but definitely knew that he was going to make some sort of contact with Smith, but probably didn't expect Smith's head to drop into his line at the last minute. Shaw was probably trying to buzz him to send a message and get him to think twice about going behind the net as much.

And Smith should've received 2 minutes for embellishment.

I wouldn't assign that much intent to it (but Smith sure does spend a lot of time behind the goal line, come to think of it), though everything else you said makes sense. You come around the net and there's a goalie completely blocking you off, I suppose it's hard to stop and turn back around, but the reality is that you can't hit goalies.

For Smith to have feigned death the way he did, right down to getting hit "so hard" his equipment flew off in every direction, was an embarrassment to the sport, and should help to keep Shaw from being suspended.

Hearing decision postponed until tomorrow.

Fuck you Shanahan. You aren't even trying to have credibility any more. You HAVE to be replaced next year.

Coyotes are pretending Smith is hurt again to draw the suspension. That's why they're delaying it. League-owned team.

It's beyond bullshit. He pops up immediately after Shaw gets sent off the ice. Says he's '100 percent, no issues at all' after the game. Then the day of the league hearing he's held out of practice.

I love that I'm so angry over Andrew bleeping Shaw.

I don't understand this - it wasn't even the most egregious hit of the day yesterday. Watching the replay it is obvious Shaw wasn't trying to hurt the guy. I mean Smith finished the fucking game and played well. Meanwhile Weber assaults another player and is handed out a $2500 fine and the Pens/Flyers series should be held in a goddamn steel cage. It makes zero sense. So frustrating.

People were legitimately trying to hurt each other in that Pens/Flyers game. James Neal is a real cocksucker it seems. I still laugh about how little involved Matt Cooke has been.

The league needs the Coyotes to advance so they can sell the team to a public-private partnership and maintain the precedent of bilking municipalities out of money.

Exactly! There should have been 7 suspensions out of that last game. There is no consistency to how or why people get fined or suspended. Its a joke.

I love PLAYOFF INTENSITY but this Pens-Flyers series is just devolving into beer-league absurdity. With Crosby, Malkin, Neal, J. Staal, Giroux, Briere, Couturier, Jagr, Timonen, and more, there's so much talent between the two teams. They should be above this.

So, Mike Smith is practicing this morning. Not talking to reporters though due to 'special circumstances' The game is in 8 hours and Shanahan still hasn't gotten around to a Shaw decision. What a joke. I see why other people make fun of my favorite sport.

If he's going to keep dragging this bullshit out all day to get Shaw suspended then I want it in writing, notarized, that our guys get to tee off on fucking Jason LaBarbera. This is just embarrassing.

Now Smith a 'game time' decision. This is one of the most bullshit sport stories I've seen.

The way Phoenix is handling this compared to the way Detroit handled Zetterberg is a pretty good example of why Detroit is the classiest/best/most respected organization in the NHL and the Coyotes are the Coyotes.

Detroit could've easily milked the Zetterberg thing in order to try and get Weber suspended, but they didn't. Instead they came out that same very night and said Zetterberg was fine and would play the next day. Compare that to the way the Coyotes are handling this?

How sad/funny is it that the Wings aren't the least bit concerned with having to face Weber whereas the Coyotes are pulling out all the dirty tricks in the book because they are scared shitless of big bad Andrew Shaw?

Shakes nailed it. Problem is worse because the NHL owns the Coyotes right now.

He can't be a "game time decision" any more than anyone else on either team. He took live shots in full pads during practice. If a goalie is concussed, they don't do that.

It's very sad/funny. What a great post.

Also, hey, remember that time Jonathan Toews got punched in the head and missed a quarter of the season, and yet somehow we didn't howl for Joe Thornton to be suspended until Toews could come back, nor did we make death threats to Joe Thornton for ruining our magical season?

When you're not lapping up every ounce of Kane's man goo you actually have a not so horrible hockey thought once in a while. Congrats.

Kane's career playoff stats: 52pts in 47 games. One OT Cup clinching gwg.

Too bad he doesn't show up in big games....

I'll be in the Madhouse for tonight's Game 3, Section 321.

I don't know what Brendan Shanahan is waiting for. Is Andrew Shaw going to be suspended for the hit in question vs. Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith Saturday in Game 2 or is he not?

I personally think this extended delay = no suspension

But, if the NHL was debating over the length of suspension, they should just say "indefinite" and then we/Hawks can move on. Sheesh.

Spanky, the longer this drags, the less I think he gets suspended. Just my own opinion...
